So Im looking into getting a new camera. I know I want a SLR that can take awesome pics but I have a budget of only about $600 to $650. What are your suggestions?

Try a canon Rebel Xti or a Nikon d3000, those are really good entry level dslr's.

I agree with him. The Nikon D3000 is a great camera.

Is there a kind of lens you would recommend?

To start out, try these two: The nikon 18mm-55mm lens and the 50mm (f/1.8) lens

Pickup a cheap D40 and start from there with some additional lens. Bought one about 2-3 years ago and havent looked back since.

WynnWarren.com to see some of the pictures I've taken with it with the stock lens.

It really depends on what kind of shooting you will be doing. The kit lens (18-55mm) with the D3000 is one of Nikon's better pieces.

Heres a good article on Nikon lenses: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/10-best.htm

What do you want to be doing? Wide angle or zoom? Close up or just a good all around lens?

i don't want to sound like a d!ck but I recommend against both of those two cameras. Yes both are DSLR's but they're at the very low end of the spectrum. I suggest waiting a little longer and getting either a Canon 7D or 50D. The D3000 and Xti both feel a little plasticky for DSLR's.

This is a great suggestion as well. Plus you could always rent lenses if you just pickup the body.

These 2 are some really decent shots, good framing, lots of contrast and detail. Nice work! The D40 has a very rich image, even for older tech.

BTW if you go for the D40 make sure it's the D40x. If you can wait to afford the D50, do it.

Have you taken any classes? You're in SD I'm sure Mesa offers some good stuff. When I entered the film program @ CSUN it was mandatory for us to take an intro to photography class to even apply for the program. We learned on celluloid film from shooting, to developing the negatives to mixing the the other chemicals and printing on actual paper. It was an amazing experience and very gratifying seeing your images come to life as they develop on the paper. I'd like to go back and do it again. I'll show you some cool things I was able to do with printing that were somewhat inventive thinking. They're what got my acceptance into the film program.

I have never taken any class at all. I just go out and take photos and read on how to take better pictures. I also try to get C&C done for my pictures to see what can be done better. I am currently about to finish school at the art institute for game art and design and try to apply some of that stuff into real life.

If you're willing to wait a bit longer, canon just released word of its new 550d dslr (t1i sucessor). It has some features of the 7d but for 1/2 the price, plus Hd video

What would be a fair price for a D40 or a D40X?

Nice! My buddy Josh used to teach game design down there. Anyways I still 100% recommend a celluloid class, you'll learn much more developing your own stuff opposed to a book.

Disaster240 dont get all caught up in equipment like everyone is leading too, start out with the D40 and just start learning and experimenting. If you find out you want a better camera in the future the D40 will still retain its retail value, and you can use the lens that you buy for it on your future purchase.

I see alot of people go out and shell $1000 bucks on a setup and it sits in a bag because its too confusing and they just get tired of it. You cant go wrong with the D40, very solid (Ive dropped my 2-3 with the lens on and no harm done).

Is this picture retouched or is this how it came out straight from the camera?

Sure there just fine as any other DSLR, has been a competitor for a very long time.
