phonebook issue

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

when I took delivery the salesguy took pride in showing me the tech features, one of which was the phonebook transfer from my iphone 3g. hit the phone button on the wheel and the phonebook came up exactly as it was in the phone. today however it was all gibberish with like 20 numbers and letters in a row almost like binary code or something. and the voice chick was trying to say them all which was funny but annoying. what would have caused this to happen? do I have to delete the phone and re-pair? is there another solution?

I've had the same problem. I ultimately deleted my phone from the car's system and reconnected as I did when I first bought the car. All is fine now, though I don't know why the problem ever occurred; it could happen again. I'm interested to read any feedback regarding your post to learn why this happened and how to prevent recurrence.

according to the ex website the first gen iphone is compatible but the phonebook transfer is not. I have a 3g and as I said initial transfer worked perfectly but each since has not. will try to delete the phone and re-pair and transfer.

as yours did my phonebook transferred and works. I dont know if its going to continue to work and I called infiniti and they are supposed to call back with info. as it is the phonebook transfer is not officially supported and the iphone 3g isnt either. however the info on the infiniti website is for the 2009 and earlier as of the moment.

I have a iPhone 3Gs. It pairs without a problem and works fine. However, when I try to download the phone book as soon as I press "Yes" on the Navigation System the iPhone's bluetooth connection drops and the Nav Screen just stays at the "...Enter 1234..." screen. Once I exit that screen on the Nav System the phone's bluetooth re-connects.

I've tried un-pairing/pairing the phone again with the car and still get the same results.

Any ideas?

I have an iPhone 3GS and had the same problem you describe when attempting to load the phonebook; oddly though I received the same message as you, when I gave up I noticed that I WAS actually able to access the phone book through the vehicle! I'm confused, but happy it actually works.

How long did it take to download? I have maybe 40 contacts in my iPhone. When the bluetooth disconnects and the Nav System displays the "...Enter 1234..." message I've waited a few minutes for something to happen and then just clicked "Back" to exit. I don't see any entries in the EX's phonebook.

Should I simply wait longer?

I have over 200 entries in my phone directory; all are acessible through the "handset directory" icon on the screen in the car. I believe that you can also directlyenter a limited number of contacts on the hard drive, though I haven't done that. Back to your question; I waited a minute or two while it appeared that the phone was attempting to link with the vehicle's system, but I ultimately cancelled the operation since it never got to a point that I could enter the "1234" code. As I mentioned, I DO now have access to my phone's directory through the car, but amnot certain why since the operation appeared to fail. I do have my car setting on "automatic", though that wouldn't seem to be the related to the problem you are encountering.

"Handset Directory Icon"? I've never seen that and I'm looking at the EX manual right now and am not seeing it either. How do I get to it (sorry for being a n00b here, but I've never seen it).

All I want is to access the Contacts on my iPhone to make calls. Whether or not those numbers are "stored" in the phonebook in the EX doesn't matter to me. Right now if I want to make a call I have to initiate it from the phone and then the Bluetooth "takes over" and the voice/sound "goes through" the EX.

I'm with Bill...I haven't downloaded any numbers to the vehicle...why...I have them all nicely available through the "handset phonebook". The vehicle library only stores 40 right? Why bother trying to download? Am I missing something?

I've accessed the handset directory by using voice commands to control the phone; once you enter the phone menu in that manner you should see the handset directory item I referenced. Give that technique a try.

I dont think its an icon. its an option. one of the colored blocks depending on your screen backround color [mines brown] it could be black. dont look for an icon look for an option.

the infiniti person I spoke to said the 3gs has problems throughout the infiniti model line. again, the 2010 listing of compatible phones on the infiniti website lists ONLY the original iphone and DOES NOT [says n/a] support transfer of the iphone phone book FOR THAT MODEL. so it looks like ONLY the 3g phone book sorta works. infiniti needs to step up their game on this one.

Ooooo...ok, duh on me.

I was going into the Phone option and looking for the "icon" there. I wasn't trying to access the iPhone's phonebook via the VOICE commands. I thought, clearly incorrectly, that since I was trying to do something with my iPhone I'd go into the "Phone" section of the EX.

I'll give the voice commands a shot then; thanks for the info everybody!

Morning fellas,

I had the same problem this morning with a customers new EX, where the transferred phone book was illegible gibberish. We removed and replaced the phone and disabled the auto sync option. The phonebook shows correctly now, and we are going to wait and see on what happens next as I plan on asking some of the people I know about this type of issue.

As for Iphones not working with Infinitis, that is more Apple not sharing their technology...or in the case of the rewired charge connector in 2007ish they changed everything without telling people. Since this phonebook issue is not common on most other phones I have to lean more towards Apple being the root cause of this problem.

I just noticed this thread is from a few months since this thread...any updates?

ok guys,
here is the official responds from infiniti R&D.
basically the bluetooth link with the iPhones will not work 100%.
at least for the text part of the phone book function.
making calls and everything else will work fine. apperently Apple dose something different than tthe standar bluetooth data communication.
so when you 1st pair the iPhone, it will work fine for a while. ( can range form hours to days) then the Text part will start to produce junk.
the only thing you can do is to delete from both the navi, and phone, then pair them again. then it will work for however long again.
other option they have told me is when you 1st pair them, while everything is working correctly, make a copy of all your contacts on to the Navi unit.
then in the future just work off from the Navi Phone book, not the handset phone book.
Infiniti R&D said they are working with Apple on this, trying to find s solution for it. but not ETA.

good luck everyone!

I haven't been able to download the phone book from a Blackberry Bold 9700. I can access the handset phone book but can't seem to download it.

Have you tried going through the bluetooth connection or through the phonebook itself?
Depending on your BB software the path is slightly different.

good to see the efforts here to get this solved. I have noticed that for some reason my phone book in the last week after having to do the aforementioned delete and re-pair shuffle seems to persist now in a legible and usable form. of course when I go to my car in about an hour or so I will have jinxed my self and it wont work but if that is the case I will try disabling the auto sync function and see what happens. since I hate apple and am going to get an android based phone [sprint evo4 or vzw incredible] next, can anyone tell me if the android OS handles this sync/pair function properly?

I cannot believe it was uttered..... :dblthumb: I totally agree.

As for the android os that is a great question. Check the link above for more detailed specs.

Since bluetooth isn't necessarily governed by anyone there is no guarantee whether or not a phone will interact correctly.

After a bit more research Apple is not going to do anything about this and their phones have limited BT compatibility as a known issue.

the jinx worked. had to re-pair. its ok though, this pos is going to be used as a music player only which it does very well when connected to the usb port. and before anyone says anything, yes I know I can do bluetooth streaming. I happen to like fidelity though so theres no way in hell I will. and my mp3s are not sh***y 64k or 96k files either. the bose stereo isnt very good to begin with but I wont further degrade the sound by using bluetooth.

The sound system in the 10+ models are much better than previous models, and those were better than the majority of the competition. I am personally enamored with the Drivers Audio Stage in these cars and the removal of the iPod only port has me actually considering getting a new car payment. Streaming works very well with Pandora or Slacker Radio but if you are using high quality correctly formatted digital files there is nothing that beats a wired connection.
