As the title says, I've got a first interview for an IT Position with a Law Firm today.

Any suggestions?

I'm usually just myself(complete nerd) and answer their questions in detail without providing anything negative about myself.

I've never actually worked in a "true" IT position. Just help desk environment stuff. I'm familiar with and have setup and maintained Windows 03 and 07 servers as domain controllers. Not too much more then that on the Server side though. Haven't really had a place to get my feet wet more then that. I've mostly handled the day to day workstation management. Pushing updates, imaging, backups, etc...

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Salary is usually brought up. What would be a good figure to throw out? I'm currently making crap. So anything is an improvement, but I don't want to fall outside of their min/max range.

"IT" is a little too broad to describe any computer job. You need more details before you can find what kind of money to make...

I'm actually not sure exactly what the position entails right now. I sent out a ton of inquiries and don't recall what this position specified as job functions.

I do know that I didn't apply for anything that I wasn't capable of. So I should be fine in that aspect.

It's probably a fully running and functioning environment. I'd guess maintenance and day to day would be the functions.

Do you have any type of ranges? This is in the Tampa Bay area. I just had a buddy get hired on in a Junior IT position. He started at $40k.

SO, I found out it is a helpdesk position.

I had the interview. It went alright. Her questions/style was really crappy.

She asking gave me the "Tell me about yourself" question. What kind of mindless crap is that. She was the HR rep. Like she had any idea what the hell I was talking about! Probably wrote down some words that caught her attention and will pass them on.

She said she'd give my information to the IT Manager for further review. So I guess that's a good thing.

SHe asked me the salary question. I danced around it and provided a mid $30s number pending assessment of actual work load.

I have been doing interviews myself. I hope yours bear fruit, mine have not. The last one was odd. The lead interviewer was obviously just doing the interview to satisfy a requirement so she could pick whoever she wanted to begin with. I decieded to just have fun and give her weird answers for giggles.

Mid 30s? that's it? Do you have any certifications?

You have to remember, this is Tampa.

The same job that gets 30 down here would get 70 up north. The market is that bad...

A decent help desk position around here will get you about 30~40 starting.

70 sounds better. I guess I'll see when I finish this cybersecurity degree and cert up.

If the company's name is Ethostream or Telkonet, run. RUN.
