Well, here's the thing, I am finally ready to start buying some computer parts and ran into a deal combo deal, so long as I get the 9550 processor.

The long and short of it is I can get the X2 6000 for regular price at 99.99; The 9550 I could then get $20 off to make it 119.99.

The question is, will I lose performance going with the 9550 over the x2 6000?

Wait. I found another sale.

Same Mobo, but with the 9950 black edition. $40.00 more than the x2 6000. That means 1066mhz ram instead of 800.

I passed up a laptop that had an AMD proc. It was a cheaper deal than the models with an Intel, but I have never had anything other than a lot of waiting and "not responding" with the AMD procs.

Personally I would go with an Intel Q6600. For the $$$ you can't go wrong.

Beanor....your life is now forfeit.

The Intel chips are definitely what you want if you need pure number crunching power. However, I've been AMD for almost a decade now, and have no intentions of switching back to Intel anytime soon. AMD has always used better algorithms and processor architecture. Does anyone remember that AMD was the first company to integrate the memory controller onto the processor die to eliminate having the northbridge performing that duty and freeing up a ton of memory bandwidth?

However, due to cash issues, they always lag behind Intel in next gen tech. AMD's other achile's heel is that the mem controllers typicaly lag behind a product cycle. Intel has been using the better DDR3 spec for a while, but AMD is just now getting to upgrading to DDR3.

I have yet to own an AMD that gave me the issues you mention, Noah. In fact, I just built a rig based on the Phenom X4 9950, and I have to say I absolutely love it. The combo deal I went with was an Asus M3A79T Deluxe mobo w/ the proc from Newegg. The mobo utilizes AMD's new southbridge design, which is much superior to the old southbridge that's been used for a few years now. The northbridge is still the 790FX chipset, but that chipset has really proven its worth.

Same here. My first AMD processor was an Athlon 500. At the time, the 600 was the fastest athlon out.

My next was an Athlon64 3800.

Now, having purchased the same NewEgg deal you did, I will soon have the Phenom 9950.

I miss computers. I have a POS Dell that some non-designer spec'd out long ago. The damn things including the 24" lcd cost $2500.

The poorly matched system combined with an IT department that wants to rule the world equals FAIL.

I remember my old XP 2700 + running faster than this thing.

I've had two AMDs and one intel. The intel was a p3 based celeron and was a POS. The OS and Mobo couldn't address more than 128 mb of RAM and was constantly crashing apps.

The next AMD was also a "value" processor. I didn't pick it, but atleast it was over the 1GHz range and moved better. The last one was the XP 2700+. It's still running at my mom's house. She helped me buy everything to put it together, then asked to buy it from me when I moved out.

It's been cleaned once since it went into operation.
