They function much like a helical design. Torque applied through the pinion drives the halves apart and into friction with the output gears. It does in fact work, but not extremely well. The biggest problem is that the strength is not as robust as a true LSD. This may not seem like a big deal since they are so cheap, but how would YOU like having chunks of broken metal floating around in your diff as you drive? I don't fear the failure of the Phantom Grip, I fear what that failure will damage.
