I'll admit I don't know anything at all about this Odierno fellow, he might be great, but WHY would we do this?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/....html

I have tremendous respect for David Petraeus, I think he's probably our best general since the Second World War. The article doesn't mention why the change was made, but the issue obviously isn't "results".

I posted this in the political forum as it would seem that there's no way that this thread will steer clear of politics, even though it's not innately political. Furthermore, it has to be considered that Petraeus will make a jump into the political world if he leaves the military. He's said otherwise, but I don't buy it.

I think he should be Secretary of Defense for WHOMEVER is elected President. He's a "once in 50 years" sort of commander, and I can't think of anyone more qualified to hold that post.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, looks like Petraeus is going to be CENTCOM now. I guess that's why they're making the change, they're promoting the guy. He obviously deserves it, although I'd still like to see him more directly holding the reins in Iraq than not. My comment about him being SecDef certainly still stands.

Yeah, being the Unified Commander of CENTCOM is a promotion for General Petraeus that is for sure. Maybe he can bring his success from Iraq into Afghanistan as well at a higher level (Central Command).bud
