Hello,I have a VG30I that i am rebuilding and converting to a VG30E. Block is completely stripped except i can't get the crank timing gear off (and consequently, the crank). Last thing to get off of the engine before it gets bored.

I've tried wheel/pulley pullers, wedges, heating it, and prying it. That sucker doesn't want to move. So am i an idiot and just missed something obvious or is there some trick to removing this thing? OR is mine just stuck. lol. If i have to i can probably machine it off but that is time consuming and i would have to get another one....

Definitely machine it or break it off and definitely do not pry too much. I've actually broken the crank snout off before trying to pry the thing off. They generally are never messed with so with time I think they basically just kind of rust to the snout and don't want to come off.

They are pretty cheap, definitely cheaper than a crank, so I would just do as I said above and destroy it to get it off.

You've broken the snout off before? Dang... why does everything have to be so complicated? Oh well. Happen to have an extra timing gear you wanna sell? Huh Huh Huh?

BTW, I love the sig!

I'll have to double check, I might just have a spare. If not you can pick one up here:

When you go to replace it, I'd very lightly sand off the rust/junk on the crank snout then very lightly lube it when you put the sprocket on or maybe even some anti-sieze grease to avoid that happening again. Also make sure the Woodruff key is in good shape, definitely don't want that to fail on you.

How about a photo of it stuck in place and I'm sure that you've applied plenty of penetrating oil? Were things rusty at all?

It's best to pull it with forces that are even/balanced at all points, keeping it as square on the shaft as possible. Have you tried a slide hammer puller?

As a precaution I actually purchased a spare for my VG30DE engine just in case I had to cut/destroy the old one to remove it, before replacing the oil seals and timing belt.

Yeah, it's soaked in penitrating oil. Yeah, it was slightly rusted, but the inside of this engine looked great for having 220,000 miles. lol. The piston bores are only .0005 out of tolerance! Pistons themselves show little to no wear and are still in tolerance! Really shocked me.

I didn't know that they where that cheap, mtcookson. I never even thought to check. Duh!

Thanks, i will just buy one, i know i'm going to be ordering some other parts from those guys any how.

Looks like i'm machining it off.

The sprocket is hollow so, depending on how you're machining it, definitely keep that in mind. It probably won't matter too much. I believe the hollow spot is right behind the depressed circle on the front of the sprocket, I'll try getting out to the garage tonight to take some pictures of it though.
