Well since the thread is 500 miles away from where it started, I'll put my take on this:
Blu-Ray all the way. There's no denying that Blu-Ray is the better of the two formats from a technology standpoint. The only benefit to HD-DVD today is the price and the fact that some studios are only offering content on HD-DVD (Universal and Paramount).
HD-DVD is just a spin-off of the existing dvd format. Blu-Ray is a completely new format that was created from the ground up to support the need for HD video and interactivity. The main technological difference is more capacity per layer (25 gb vs. 15 gb) and a higher streaming bit-rate.
It'll take a while for either format to win, but ultimately Blu-Ray will be the champion. Companies like Sony have already convinced most of the providers of content (movie studios, etc) that Blu-Ray is the better format and currently Blu-Ray players have outsold HD-DVD 2:1, which means the providers of the content have a larger base of customers to sell to. I personally met the group of individuals who work for Sony that are campaigning this technology to the studios, and they mentioned that swaying Universal is their next objective.
Just as DVD is now being phased out by the need for 1080p content, HD-DVD will eventually be phased out when the higher streaming bit-rate and data storage are manditory to support the content that customers desire.
