yup so I needed to transfer some files the other day to a friend so I set up this FTP server... I was figurin I could make a NICO account if some people (with FAST CONNECTIONS ONLY) wanted to snag some songs or whatever... Ive got like 11 gigs of mp3s and probably some other junk- it'd be nice if people would set up their own servers and we could share, too.

So IM me for an account: foosternit

FTP = File Transfer ProtocolRuns on port 21 (default). Mainly used for transferring data from one computer to another.

HTTP = Hypertext Transfer ProtocolRuns on port 80 (default). Same as FTP but it can translate web component files such as text and images.

Do I have to use my computer or can I use my website? Damn school has weekly datatransfer limits: 1.5 gigs upload and 1.5 gigs download per week, if you excede they downgrade you to a 56k connection for the rest of the week.

EDIT: does this look like a good program? http://freeware.aceftp.com/

A good and free client program for FTP is http://www.smartftp.com

If you have Win2k, Win XP pro, or Win 2k3 you can use a MS program called IIS to easily setup a server. THere is also Bullet Prooft FTP, G6, and a few others that are good.

1.5 gigs is not *that* much, but you can ceartainly use that up quickly. (At one point I was at 70 gigs per month) Right now I dont use more than 5 or 5 per month...

Are you asking about setting up an FTP or downloading? You wouldn't want to use your website to transfer files through the HTTP protocol because you'd get hit with double the 'charge' once for uploading it to your server (School would record that) and once for people downloading it (Company would record that)

So the best thing to do if you wanted to set up a small time FTP would be host it using your computer and a server mentioned above.

As far as just downloading using SmartFTP... Well you will just have to watch your bandwidth with a meter (I"ll look that upp in a second)

Yah but i would only have to upload once if i use the website, instead of having to upload every time someone wants the file. And if i could transfer a file from a ftp server to my website server then i wouldnt use any download bandwidth until i want the file. I also wouldnt have to upload any files i get from other ftp servers. Makes sense to me :(

doh, your right. Makes sense to do it that way if you want. But you also have no control over who downloads your files

I think it would be illegal to host anything copyrighted on it.
