All right, now that I have your attention, I just want to know what kind of mufflers any of you have used for your custom-made exhausts. I have one, and I am currently using a Magnaflow oval racing series muffler, and I'm growing tired of the super loudness (had it for almost 4 yrs now, was a X-mas present--not my idea to get the race series one), I thought my DC sports header would make the tone sound a little better but it hasn't changed it--just made it louder actually.

I plan on sticking with Magnaflow because they are well made and the shop I had my exhaust re-made at sells them so i could get one thru them easily.

However, I was curious if anyone uses any other brands i.e. Apex'i, Tanabe, HKS, etc. And how you like the sound. I don't want to go with something w/ a lot of baffles and restrictions (cause then what's the point?) *aaaaand* Magnaflow's street series are still straight through but much narrower w/ more packing I believe. If I don't get any responses I guess I'll just go w/ a round single street-series muffler from Magnaflow, since the oval one doesn't look quite right w/ the angled piping anyway.

Just wondering on what some of you guys use.

I, also am a Magnaflow man myself. I went through 2 different exhausts. both were 2.5" with the street series round muffler. It is available in 2 different diameters, I went with the bigger one, 6" I think. Both exhausts had a pre-muffler I used as a resonator, and a Magnaflow 2.5" cat. One was a 4" round x 14" long. That helped deepen the sound, but it was still kinda loud. It buzzed a bit at cruise as well. The second used an oval pre-muffler. I can not recall the size, but with the car on the lift, it was the biggest that would fit without to much work. This one had a deeper tone, still kinda loud, but was very quiet at cruise.Don't know if that helps any, I am presently in love with my Blitz Realize, though I am looking into the Apexi WS/ Hybrid Megaphone.

I love the sound of my dynomax (and dynomax is all about claiming better flow than the other guys) im running their "super turbo" model.

however mine is far from considered an "import-style" muffler, just a universal one that doesnt look very pretty at all...

i got a hks super dragger with 2.5 piping. i think it sounds good just a tiny bit raspy compared to some other 240s i heard but still a long ways away from the honda sound. i have also heard a lot worse soundin 240s so i would say it doesnt sound bad at all.

I had 2.5" piping, Catco high flow converter, and a universal 80mm Tanabe Tuner Medallion muffler. This was all +/- $150: inexpensive 6ft 2.5" piping, $1 per bend at local exhaust shop, Catco high flow=cheap off ebay, Tanabe muffler= $100 off ebay.

Personally I think the car sounded sweet...and I got a lot of compliments. At idle it sounded mean...I had stock cams but it sounded like it had a little lope to it. Throughout the RPMs it just sounded pissed off...a lot of people told me it sounded like a WRX. Kind of loud, but I got used to it. I ran it with the resonator one time and it sounded like garbage, but without it I was never harassed by the 5-0, and they are damn picky where I live.

3" hotshot headers no catand 3" Magnaflow canister at the back

LOUD AS HELL, the noise was so unbereable the I removed the muffler after 15 mins of usage. Now have a 3" super turbo at the midpipe and a single 3" in dual 2.5 magnaflowsounds is......well for me sounds at idle that my GN, but at WOT....woah..... scares the hell out of anyone I pass.

Hmm... I kind of like that warbly, bumbly sound, see, the problem with mine is that around the low gears, when I lift off the throttle to shift there's an awful "BRAAAAAAAAAAAAPPP" like a Honda, but once i get on the throttle again it's 'ok.' So you say with a resonator the Tanabe sounded awful? Do you mean a resonator or a silencer??

My setup uses a Magnaflow hi-flow cat, 2.5" piping, a Magnaflow 3" resonator section (it's about 18" long) and there's one bend angling it out a little before the swaybar. The muffler I currently have is a 5x8 oval w/ 3" inlet (i didn't buy, i remind everyone! lol) but the muffler shop i went to did quite an awesome job w/ the reducer and the welding.

here's a pic of it on there site:

Well I already have a Magnaflow resonator in place (that I had done after i got my header since I anticipated some nastiness), it's a 4" round, 18" affair I believe. I don't have a problem w/ raspiness/brassiness, just the loud-resonating honda sound that i can't stand, i want it lower and more warbly. If that makes any sense.

The shop that did my custom exhaust were really awesome and cool. I even came back after some rattling I heard and they welded on more hangers. So i think they'd probably be accomodating on finding a better sound.

Thanks guys.

Sorry, I meant the silencer. It made it sound really annoying...ricer-ish.

Mine wasn't too bad when I let off the gas, thats when it made the bumbly sound.

Hmmm... I think I'll consider the Tanabe, since I don't know much about the street series Magnaflow round mufflers. You said you had the 80mm--inlet right? Did your car sound like that before you went turbo? I think I'll go w/ the 60mm inlet, and since I have a resonator, I bet it will sound pretty good w/ no silencer. Honestly, I don't think it could be louder than what I have, my car is LOUD. I drown out Honda's

Did you make those just for me? j/k

My car sounds like that at idle and startup, but not driving. Is that driving sound clip from inside the car? I like it.

The thing i don't like about Dynomax, Borla, etc, is all the riduculous baffles, I mean, I got rid of the stock muffler for that reason. I know those brands are not *as* restrictive, but.. well.. (i'm not going to turn this into one of those kind of threads). I know I lost some low-end since mine is completely wide open from the cat back.

How do you feel about it Glitched? Besides theDynomax muffler, do you have a resonator or pre-muffler? I like the Tanabe when I read about it because it doesn't use steel wool or fiberglass for packing, they use something much lighter and longer-lasting (synthetic).

lol, well i recorded them with my mp3 player last year, I just uploaded them last night for you

Yeah that is from inside the car. I know the mufler is lighter than stock but not as light as it could be, and that it is better flowing than stock, but not as flowing as it could be, but i still have stock manifold and cat. after that its 2.5 in piping all the way to the 2.5in in/out muffler. and I dont plan on getting better flowing until i go turbo.

when i first had the muffler installed they did it crooked for that "import look" (and the pipe required less bends that way) I took it back and had em fix it...

I personally cant stand that crooked look with the muffler sticking out sideways because the pipe behind it isnt bent enough... this is one part that i will stick with looks(or in this case- a lack of) over performance, whatever fraction of performance i loose for having an extra bend or 2 in my pipes....

Yup...80mm inlet. I think its a nice looking muffler too. I had the one with the slant-cut tip...I don't know if they make the tuner medallion with a different style tip.

I just got done adding an OBX header to my Tsudo (N1 copycat) with no silencer. Not loud at all. As a matter of fact I love how it sounds. I do still have my cat. There was barely an increase in sound, yes sounds a little raspier but you can tell is breathing easier with better flow.

I have OBX knock-off 2.5", no CAT, 3" single resonator and a HKS 4" exhaust on my NA KA24DE.

VERY loud before the resonator. I put in one for $50 and it toned down a lot. I think two would have been better.

Even w/o the resonator it does not make anything like Integra sound which is hi-pitch. It has lower growl than a Mustang V8 or Dodge RAM V8. Much less banging noise.

The exhaust noise goes away instantly once the throttle is depressed and keeps a great tone even under hi-rev. Nothing too hi-pitch.

I'll try to post a sound this weekend. I don't have a camera but I could try a laptop and webcam.

Well thanks for your help guys. I figure i'd update and say I ordered a Tanabe 60mm/90mm tip 'racing' medallion muffler from them. Reasons why being:

a. the better packing material used in the muffler (no steel wool, no fiberglass crap)b. the fact it includes a silencer

Ordered it from FRsport for the sweet price of $183 shipped (they retail for $250+ and they price matched HopUpRacing's sale price ). WoOt.
