Peeling paint

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I was washing my EX today, and noticed in several areas on the rear bumper where small chunks of paint are coming off around the bottom inside edge of the lower signal/taillights. Also, on the seam of the higher part of the bumper where it meets the metal rear quarter panel.

I plan on going to the deal to see what they say and hopefully we can work something out.

The Ex is white. My dad thinks the proper way to fix it is to remove the bumper and repaint everything. I am concerned that this will not work. The reason is the three coat paint/pearl, plus the scratch shield.

Has anyone noticed this on their EX.

I have the Same White Pearl on mine and i have not noticed anything like that yet, if you did not have any previous body work or accident on your vehicle, i recommend you to deal with the dealer for paint defect and you should ask them to remove the bumper before they paint it.

i concur with gloa2000. if the vehicle was in an accident, the repair shop forgot to add flex additive to the paint. i highly doubt that it's an infiniti issue.

if you don't know of an accident, then i would start doing research stat.

I have 2500 Km on the vehicle. No accidents from my end.

I looked further today, and it appears to me there is no paint on the inside lip. It is kind of grey, which makes me think there is only one coat of paint.

I talked to the service folks and the body shop manager today.

They feel it is a factory issue. The body shop fellow suggested the inside of the area where the signal light is would have been masked off. The plastic is rough on the inside edge. They feel the area wasn't prepped properly.

The area where the bumper meets the quarter panel, they didn't really have an answer for that area.

Initially the service advisor was going down the path that the bumper must have been repainted.. I told her I bought the car with minimal KM's and I had not had an accident. The body shop manager confirmed there was no evidence the bumper had been repainted, and felt it was a factory issue.

The chat went quite well, however, the body shop guy was very straight forward and I appreciated his time and comments, he said he does not feel comfortable in painting the full bumper as it is very hard with this 3 coat pearl process on plastic to match the colour. He said humidity, static electricity and other conditions dictate the out come.

At this point they will be doing a touch up on the upper bumper/quarter panel to eliminate some of the eye sore.

They will document this with infinity and at some point if this gets worse then we will deal with it.

I am happy but also disappointed as it is noticeable. I guess I can't bring myself to have the bumper painted so early in the car's life.

Every manufacturer has their issues. I don't think it is fair to blame the owner on everything or assume the company would not be at fault. If there is a perfect car out there, let me know.

One of my reasons for going to Infitinti was styling, fit and finish, respect for the company, and that the car was near perfect.

The paint issue got worse over the winter, so I decided to go back to the dealership. The car was in the body shop for 2 days. I had a 2009 EX35 as a loaner. Anyway, I picked it up today, and realized they did not fix the chipped paint around the signal lights. They did fix a section around the rear right taillight. So, I go back next week and they are going to pull the signal lights out and use a touch up pen to try and disguise the black chips. The body shop manager said he would be able to make it look good. WE shall see.

I was not feeling comfortable with this in the first place. I hate when something like this happens. The excuse was the paint man likely thought the signal lights would cover the chips. :(
