Pedals Are Suddenly Slow to Adjust

Hi, all -- '03 Murano, 158K

I'm a foot taller than my wife, and today the pedals started making a sort of grinding noise as I tried to adjust them from her size to mine. They did eventually move back to the right height, but were a little slow to make it.

Any ideas? Thanks.
