I would REALLy love to have a nice set of cams for my KA24DE 95, but emissions are the only thing setting me back. CT does a sniffer, (in fact, they are in the process of changing their emissions, so I'm sure it will only get STRICTER,) and, as it is, I already do NOT have a catalytic converter on my car. I will be replacing the dummy cat with a high-flow cat so it will pass emissions with my headers, but I also want it to pass with PDM cams...according to http://www.pdm-racing.com, and Don himself, the cams are a very "mild, street profile," and he was able to pass strict BC aircare emissions up in Canada with his cams...Straight from his site: "these cams have even passed strict B.C. Government Aircare emissions testing! "and.."Stage II PDM Cams - Intake 219 duration, .379 lift, Exhaust 221 duration, .384 lift. These cams are VERY streetable, with no injector or computer upgrades required, and pass the strictest emissions with proper tuning."

The words "proper tuning" make me uneasy..I tried asking Don what is "tuning" consisted of, but he just replied with a lawyer-type response...."We take no responsibility for emissions passing, as each car can be in it's own "state of tune". We only stipulate that the stage II cams in MY car passed B.C.'s strict Air Care emissions. But we will not guarantee anybody passing in their own State.

don"

I'm wondering what kind of tuning I will have to do in order to pass the sniffer, which I assume is a lot like other states...As don said, it is a really mild cam profile, and doesn't have drastic specification changes when compared to the stock KA24DE cams...which are Intake - 207 degrees duration, .350 lift, Exhaust 215 duration, .367 lift. ....So the reason i'd need to "tune" my car to pass emissions would be because I'd be letting in and out a good amount more air, and therefore unburnt gas/chemicals/toxins...shouldn't a good Catalytic converter take all of that out of the air?

Please, for anyone who's installed these cams, or Nismo cams , or JWT cams, please let me know how much "tuning" you had to do, and what kind of tuning in order to pass the sniffer-part of the emissions. To pass, would I make the car run lean? How would I go about doing this? Any insights, etc would be great...I want these, but I also want to be legal! Thanks a lot in advance!

I wouldn't be too concerned. Most streetable cams will barely dent the emissions. I'd say as long as the motor is running the way it should, there should be no problems with it. By tuning, I think he was referring to normal tuning as opposed to performance tuning. Typically high overlap cams tend to be the worst problem especially when you get to the amounts that cause 8-stroking(mis-fire on every other combustion stroke) and starts spitting unburned fuel into the exhaust.

Thanks C-kwik...any other takers? I wish don were a bit more detailed in his responses about "tuning" for emissions...

Don is running a business. And unless he puts everything together for you, there is no way he can guarantee the results. Even then, there are other variables that are out of his control. For him to just say it will work, would be irresponsible. In fact, I'd be less akin to believe a shop that does guarantee results. They probably would have no idea what they are talking about.

C-kwik...I didn't mean to discredit you in any way...I dont know if you took that as a personal attack. I have very similar mods to Don, engine wise anyway, so mine should pass...basically, my car's in perfect running order engine wise, idles fine, goes up to the redline and back fine, 92k miles, starts up easily, warms up easily, doesnt run too lean or too rich, just a basically stock, no knocking sounds or misfires or offensive exhaust odors...it's a well cared-for car that has headers, cat back exahust, CAI, and soon to be cams...If a car is in perfect running condition with all those mods, assuming it has a catalytic converter (high-flow), I want to know if it will pass..that's all, and I think it will, because those cams aren't that much different spec wise than the stock cams...very mild cams.

your car should pass without any problem. My 95 with 268° camshafts passed with a highflow cat, and GReddy header.

All cams for our cars will have to be shimmed.I have yet to find a dirrect drop in other than to regrind a stock camshaft.

Actually I was just trying to clarify why shop owners would say something like that. So I didn't take anything personal. A state of tune could refer to poor ring sealing, leaking valve seals, dirty filter, fouled plugs, etc...

But if all is well, then I doubt yo'll have any problems passing smog.

agreed.a motor with mild cams in good shape should not have any problem with smog (except maybe in Los Angeles).

well if your really worried about it you should get ahold of some white gas, though i dont see any issue either. I have to go up for emissions because i forgot to last month and im not worried (except for all the damn fees).

yes, they are drop ins, and you will pay $500 for them...and lose a good amount of torque in the process...i heard they are good 3500-redline, whereas the PDM's are good all around

148.6 rwp hp 5,777.6 rpm

torque 141.1 4380.4 rpm

the nissmo cams do not red line at 3,500 ask me for my dyno sheet.

i believe he meant from 3500 to redline, which sounds about right for the nismo cams.

Why do you think they are the best? Have you seen these cams perform? any dyno sheets?

First, they're Nissan Motorsports cams, not NISMO. You won't find KA24DE cams in the NISMO catalog. Nissan Motorsports International (NISMO) is not the same thing as Nissan Motorsports USA (Nissan Motorsports).

That said, the PDM cams are a more aggressive grind than the Nissan Motorsports cams. The Motorsports cams are just two early S13 248-degree exhaust cams, with one cam repinned for use as an intake cam. It won't give much of an increase on S13's with the 240/248 cams (but it's more noticeable on S14's which have 232/232).

From the dyno charts I have seen, the JWT cams will give a good 5-6 whp gain with maybe a 1hp loss on the low end. The PDM cams will give a ~10whp gain with maybe a ~5hp loss down low.

Well Im guessing when my car was stock it put down around i'd say 127rwhp (i guess) and when I dyno'ed my car It put down 148.6 rwhp thats a 21 rwhp gain I had no reprogramed ECU at that timeI know all that power did'nt come from my intake so im guessing my cams gave me around 12 rwhp.
