Hey guys,

I'm looking for a PDA to get my scatter-brained *** organized and in gear. What kind do you have? Can you recommend a model that is relatively cheap ($100-150 price range)?

TIA

I read that Sony plans to exit the Clie product line from the US market. Not sure if this will have an impact on support and upgrades, but it might. I like my SJ-33 a lot though. If you're only using your pda for the calendar, you're missing out. There are a lot of really cool apps out there that you can download for free, so get at least 8MB of memory, 16 even better.

I have Clie UX-50 and omg I love it... best thing about it? is the blue tooth :) I can be online anywhere as long as I have my cell phone with me.

Daedalus is correct, Sony IS exiting the clie product and the UX-50 was the last product that they made. Also, alotttt of free apps to download that can be very helpful and fun.

I know that you were looking for a PDA for around $100 - $150 but the new refurbished UX-50 is going for $400... maybe you can find it cheaper.

Clies, IMO, are the best for the money. Even the lower end ones are real nice. And, as was mentioned, plenty of free stuff for em on the net. I suppose it also depends whether you want Palm OS or Windows, though. Toshibas aren't bad if you're a Windows junkie. They are a bit more expensive though.

I hate PDAs with stupid little clicky menus and buttons shoved into every ****ing nook and cranny of the screen. Thats why I hate Pocket PC and Sony's bastardization of the Palm OS.

I disagree.. The pocket PC is a lot easier to use (especially if you use windows, its nearly the same)...

There is a lot of buttons on them but theyre usually strategically placed.. I love my Ipaq!!!

You could find a nice Ipaq on ebay pretty cheap... Get the 38xx series because they are upgraded in every way..

No wonder I like my Pocket PC. :pface

Actually I think Windows CE is a bit more intuitive since most people already know windows. It is a resource hog compared to the simpler Palm OS, but it's hardly a make it or break it deal for me.

I have the IPaq 4155.

Yeah 64mb for a PPC device is like 8MB on palm... Everything takes up a lot of room, but imo its a lot better.....

I've had a couple Pocket PCs, and they're great, but I keep coming back to the Palm OS. Pocket PCs seem to have the latest and greatest features wayyy before any Palm device does. Unfortunately, the poor(er) battery life and larger size of most Pocket PCs ends up sending me back to Palm.

Now with Palm devices including brilliant color screens, MP3 support, WiFi, and bluetooth, I'm headed back to the palm camp..

Ive had BOTH (had an old M100) and the palm required more time getting used to it, and that stupid GRAFITTI... The PPC recogizes many different ways for certain letters.....

Thats another good point (metaorbit), however I use mine for about 6 hours a day and it doesnt even scratch the surface on the battery...

i just throw it on the cradle, it backs up everything and charges my battey... If it lasts one day Im happy.....

I first had a Trogon Palm Power Pocket PC (basically a relabeled Casiopeia). I got frustrated with the slow processing, lack of software (at the time), bad display, and horrible battery life. I then switched camps to a Palm IIIe. That was fun and all, but 2MB non-upgradeable memory got old quick, though the nearly 2 weeks on a set of 2 AA's rocked. I then started wanting the new color screen PDAs and whatnot and went back to the Pocket PC and picked up a Jornada 540. Nice screen, size, but the processing wasn't that fast for the programs I wanted to run, and the battery life was horrible. It was about that time that I also started making all my devices WiFi enabled, and of course the 540's battery would die within 1-2 hours using the WiFi card. To try and solve that, I upgraded to a HP Jornada 568. This thing rocked. 64 MB, stereo sound, IR, brilliant screen, and a Lithium Polymer battery. I even got the little HP keyboard that fit over the top of it like another cover and got a GPS system to run navigation in my car. Well, the GPS system wasn't as good as it was cracked up to be and the battery life still sucked with the WiFi card, so away it went. Not too long ago, I got a hand-me-down Palm Zire 71. The screen on that thing blew me away, and it's user friendliness rocked. (BTW - I don't think graffiti is even around anymore...could be wrong though). I then got one of the very first released Sandisk WiFi SDconnect cards for the Zire (the first of it's kind made for a Palm device) and gave it a shot. Well, it worked perfectly, but the SLOW processor on the Zire made it horrible to use for loading pages and even using AIM. Thus the card went back to buy.com, and the Zire is going to my sister.

NOW...LOL...I'm about to place an order for a Palm Tungsten C. This sucker has a 400 mhz ARM processor, 64MB, and built-in WiFi. Palm lists the battery life as 8 hours(!) and independent reviews have gotten as much as 6 hours using WiFi the whole time. Not to mention, this thing has a builtin QWERTY keyboard right on the front of the case. I think, maybe, LOL, that I've finally found the PDA that will suit me for awhile. Unfortunately, I'm a gadgeteer, and I'm afraid that won't be the case. As it is, I can't keep a cell phone for any more than 3 months...I always have to get the latest greatest. And right now my T616 is itching to be replaced with a Nokia 6230 (Love Nokias, but have stayed away for much the same reason I stayed away from Palms...though now with this one it seems as though they've gotten all the features I want in a size I want).

Anyways, Pocket PCs and Palms definitely have their different strengths. As you can see, I've switched back and forth. So, to the thread starter - play with as many as you can, and then decide what you want. As for me, WiFi and the power it consumes seems to seriously limit my choices.

Sharp Zaurus. Something about the ability to run linux on a pda just appeals to me.

Palm OS owns all, if it didn't then Palm would be to PPC as Apple is to WinXP and it's NOT. Plain and simple.

Damn im still stuck in the dark ages with PDA's. IVe still got my old Handspring Visor that i got for high school in 01. But it still works fine. Now if i could find the hotsync software i could get games back on it. Its the ''base'' model with 2mb of memory. Damn do i miss playing the black and white race car games in math class.

I scored a free PDA, whee!

I bought mine the same time my brother did a few years ago, except I sold mine due to its limitations, and now he's giving me his.

Casio BE-300, 80MB (including CF card), 32k color, 166MHz (I think). Casio ships it with a bastardized interface on top of a Windows CE 3.0 core. Thanks to almost no compatibility (out of the box) with PPC/CE software, it might as well be 100% proprietary.

I installed third-party tools and managed to make it mostly PocketPC 2000 compatible.

Most of the reason why I hate CE and PocketPC goes back to a Philips Nino P/PC I owned years ago. My Apple Newton 110 was showing its age, and it was time to move on, I figured. The Nino was blue, attractive, played music, and was a steal back then at $200 with 16MB of storage. It froze/crashed constantly, the alarm went off at bizarre unscheduled times (in the middle of class sometimes) and data corruption was frequent. CE 2.11 is what it ran, if I recall. In the heat of anger, 45 days after buying it, I threw it in the garbage and it felt -great- (still does).
