PCV hoses, whats the DEAL

Okay guys in my 90 tt i found that the hoses connected to the pcv valves have a round metal ring inside of them along with a wire brush it looks like. Thoes it have to have this in there?

*shrugs* I have never really had to deal with it but here is what I have learned on many many other PCV hoses.

the mesh or flametrap feature is because you are circulating oil fumes back to the crankcase and sometimes flames or heat or too much oil will flow through the hoses. It will break up flames from traveling, stop large oil deposits in the mesh, etc.

You can take it out, but there is not much reason to. Most ppl clean it out if it is dirty or replace it. Removing it is not gonna blow up your car, but its there for a reason

Thanks man...I see. I guess i'll just go to the dealer and get the orginal hoses. The old hoses were all hard and beat up and i just wanted to know if i could just put any other normal hose. Thanks
