Hello guys,

I have an 02 Nissan Pathfinder LE that about 3 months ago shutoff on I95 driving to work. Turned out to be a bad alternator so went ahead and replaced it with along with a new battery.

Recently was driving at night on I95 and started noticing lights were flickering so I went ahead and quickly took an exit; at which point car shut off.

Engine will not turn or crank when attempting to start, but when booster cables attached giving it juice car starts up. Only problem is that after removing cables in a few minutes car shuts down again.

Removed alternator and took it to auto parts store and after checking it was told it’s fine.
Any ideas guys? Would appreciate your feedback!

P.S when the car shuts off the gear shift locks up; so I use a flat head screwdriver to unlock it in the override slot. After fixing car, problem is that gearshift started locking up sometimes when parked. Is there a way to fix this or reset it? Thanks!

It sounds like bad cable connections.
Has it been exposed to a salt environment?
I would check all the positive and ground cable connections on the battery and body and engine.

I live in south Florida and believe the previous owner also; so not much danger from salt on roads during winter.
I’ll check the connections and advise if that helped. Thanks!

I also live in SE FL. Remove and clean the battery cables till they each are shiny....also check each cable very carefully for any possible nicks or cuts, sounds like something is shorting out and draining the battery.

I'm betting it's the battery cables. Maybe a ground.

No, not much danger from salt on roads but what you do have is extremely high humidity and that is a big source of accelerated corrosion in metal surfaces.
