91 Pathfinder has a weak point at the rear forward clutch assembly( needle bearing) and has a updated low/rev bearing support and needle bearing. It sounds like you have a internal hyd. leak in a clutch pack and is likely in the forward clutch assembly. Unfortunatly this means going into the trans again.

Hey Doc

I took the truck back to the mechanic on monday have not heard from them as yet i did tell them about ur thoughts ......but they firmly believe that since they rebuilt the trans that my prob may be electrical ........like throttle position sensor or so especially since i only get 10 miles per gal even though i replaced the oxygen sensor that was bad and now i receive no trouble codes at all from any of the 5 modes in the computer box.........

tell me somthin ...this leak that you suspect would it be visible to the eye when the transmission is being rebuilt?

I read this at a site on subarus that share the same trans what do u think?

Engine RPMs increase between gear shifts- is the transmission beginning to fail? Most likely the brake band needs to be adjusted. If the band is loose, you’ll see engine rpms increase between shifts. If it’s too tight, you may feel a ‘braking’ effect between shifts. Luckily, the band can be adjusted. Locate a 10mm screw/bolt whose head is located on the left side of the transmission towards the top. It screws down into the transmission, right behind the front differential. It has a lock nut on it to secure it in place. Subaru techs have a special socket that fits it although you can improvise if you work hard enough. Loosen the lock nut, then you can tighten the adjusting screw. Don't turn more than 1/2-3/4 turn. If it's too tight, you'll feel a 'braking' between shifts. If it's really tight, you'll shift from 2nd right to 4th. If it's too loose, you'll see engine rpm increase between 1-2 and 3-4 gear, or a time lag between 3-2 kickdown. Do NOT loosen excessively, as this may cause the band to fall off the servo piston, requiring the case to be opened to correct.

hi doc u never did respond to my last post but here is an update on my situation

hey here is an update on my situation let me fill u in on some details first i had bought a old used pfinder for parts so i offered the guy the old trans for a discount on my repairs just so happens that since it was already out he rebuilt the one i was giving him and thats when i contacted u guys with my shift prob that was not fixed .............another forum had informed me about a 10mm bolt on some brakes band that can be adjusted that may cause this prob if too loose or make it miss a gear all together if too tight ............the mechanic refused to adjust sayin he been doin these for years etc..............anyway 2 weeks later he calls sayin he done and all he had to do was adjust my throttle position sensor and it began to shift like a charm..........only sad thing is this if that is tru it makes me wonder if there was ever a transmission prob to start with:( and well now he tells me that my truck shuts down with him every 5 mins like it running out of gas so now i need to take it to some a mechanic (since he a transmission specialist ) to find out what my new prob is .........welll at least i have the trans fixed hopefully it just a short or somthin as i did notice that either the engine or trans was behaving erratic like it was shakin up on the drive over to him and also the whole truck would seem to lose power if i fell into a hole then seem to come bak to life after a while any ideas?
