I have a 07 Pathfinder with the factory 4 pin tow package. I think it is hardwired for a 7 pin round RV plug . The 4 pin flat plugs into a harness on the left side of the frame near the tire. There is also an other plug there also. Is this extra plug for the 7 pin? Is this also hardwired for a brake control? In the fuse box in the engine compartment there are fuses in place for brakes. Are these also for the tow package? What will it take to convert the 4 pin flat to a 7 pin round? The dealers don't know and just want me to "bring it on in"Bob the caver

The fuses under the hood are for the truck brakes, not trailer brakes. The truck is wired for the 4 pin. I got a new plug it has both the 4 pin and 7 pin, you have to wire up the additional things like constant power, brakes etc. I ran power from the battery to the new plug fused of course. I then made a new bracket to mount the new plug to the hitch. Shoot me your e-mail and I can send some pics of what I did, it's really easy to do. If you do not have experience in electrical I would have someone wire the brakes and constant power for you, a local RV shop should be able to that or a trailer store.

Do you actually need the functionality of the 7-pin with the charging and brake control or do you just need a compatible plug so you can operate lights?

If you just need something to operate turn signals, brake lights, and running lights, you can buy adapters at any RV supply store and most auto supply stores that will do the job. Even Wally World has a lot of adapters.

I wanted to mention a couple of other things.1) I seriously doubt that a Pathfinder (or any other SUV) comes with brake controls from the factory. To my knowledge, the only passenger vehicle that does is Ford's HD F250/F350 truck. Even if it the wires are already there, you will still need a brake controller to be installed somewhere in the cab.2) Your owner's manual should indicate if the second plug you see is for additional towing wiring. On my truck, the manual pointed out a wiring harness that was tied up with zip ties that I probably never would have found.3) "Taking it in" isn't such a bad idea. Wiring up vehicles isn't the most difficult thing, but there are risks and it's time consuming. Some things are worth paying an RV shop $250 (including the cost of a brake controller) to do it for you in a day.

Speaking from a lot of experience towing and hauling heavy things, don't be cheap and skip things that you need. Since you are asking about electric brakes, I assume you are not towing a boat. If you are towing a heavy load, get weight distribution, sway control, and brake control. You don't want to be driving down the highway with no weight on your front wheels and smoldering brakes.

I have found out that the 07 pathfinder is pre-wired for a seven pin. Nissan sells conversion that will plug in near the right rear tire. A relay is also needed in the fuse area in the engine compartment. It is located in a box in front of the fuse box. The brake control harness is also available from Nissan. The plug in is located under the dash to the right of the steering column. I think the only other item I need is the brake controller. The Question is now if I hook this up will it work or is there something I am missing?Bob the Caver

Sounds like they made it easy! Everything should work very smoothly after you take those last two steps.

-The relay under the dash activates the charging wire on the 7-pin wiring harness.

- The brake controller will have one line in and one line out. The line in will tell it the the brakes have ben activated. The line out will go the the brake control line on the 7-pin connector. Both if these connections, as well as a ground, should be in that connection under the dash.

The other five pins should already be done as part of the factory harness. Check this web site for more info on wiring the brake controller:http://www.marksrv.com/wiring.htm

Congratulations. You should be totally wired and ready to go in an afternoon.

Yup, you are correct. You might not need the relay.

Use this wiring harness (Brake Control Sub Harness) to connect the vehicle brakes to your trailer's BRAKES (not lights). Note: installation instructions are not included. APPLICATION: 2004 - 2008 Armada 2005 - 2008 Frontier 2005 - 2008 Pathfinder - Please note: 2006 Pathfinders with a VIN ending with -763841 and higher require the Relay listed below (see Related Items) 2004 - 2008 Titan 2005 - 2008 Xterra

Oops, I should have said "relay under the hood". I know that on the 3/4 and 1-ton trucks that I am familiar with for hauling campers/5th wheels/boats/etc. the manufaturers usually put in the circuit for the charging line, but do not install the relay to make it active when the key is on fr some reason.

Did you get this working. I have a 4 flat and 7 round combo harness that I am trying to put in. Nissan installed my trailer brake unit in my cab, but now they are telling me that all I need to do is connect the existing 4 flat into the back of the harness , install the ground wire, and tie up the other two wires, that they are not needed. Is this correct as you did it?
