For the idle issue, my 03 Pathfinder behaves the same way, as do a lot of other Pathy's, AFAIK. For me it's a big help, since I live in Canada and it helps warm it up faster. As long as it's not stalling when you put it into gear, or idling excessively (2000RPM+), then I wouldn't worry about it.
For the shifting issue... if you have an automatic then the only thing I can suggest, unless you're willing to tear apart the transmission, is checking the A/T fluid. It can shift hard when the level is too high or low or if the wrong fluid was used. When was the last time you changed the fluid? When was the last time the A/T filter was changed?
