Pathfinder SE troubles

Hi everyone, new to the sight so here we go. I have two problems with my 1998 pathfinder. First, it running high idle around 1000rpm to 1100rpm in nuetrual. When I give it a little rev it jumps to 1500 rpms and sticks their for a couple of seconds then comes back down to 1000rpms. When I put it in drive in drops to 750rpm to 800rpm. The only thing i have done to it was clean the throttle plate, it had some crud on it. Second, is it shifts hard sometimes and i get a heavy chatter aronud 40 mph. It doesn't seem like I lose power but it scares me enough not to take on long trips. I do not have a locale Nissan dealer so i am somewhat on my own.

For the idle issue, my 03 Pathfinder behaves the same way, as do a lot of other Pathy's, AFAIK. For me it's a big help, since I live in Canada and it helps warm it up faster. As long as it's not stalling when you put it into gear, or idling excessively (2000RPM+), then I wouldn't worry about it.

For the shifting issue... if you have an automatic then the only thing I can suggest, unless you're willing to tear apart the transmission, is checking the A/T fluid. It can shift hard when the level is too high or low or if the wrong fluid was used. When was the last time you changed the fluid? When was the last time the A/T filter was changed?

Thanks for the input, living in the hills PA I can see your point. For the trans I think I will try replacing the filter and fluids. I just bought it a couple months ago, so I am just finding little things here and there. Thanks
