Hi all,I recently had a new transmission and throw out bearing installed in my '99 pathfinder but now it's slipping out of 3rd and 4th gears. It is particularly noticable when I shift into these gears at low RPMs (~2500), and always when the car is coasting. It doesn't happen when I have pressure on the accelerator, only when there is little 'pressure' on the gears.

Any advice would be great. It's been in twice for this problem now and I don't think they know why it's happening.

thanks.

Thanks voolover!

Could it be possible that something may have been damaged through the process of replacing the clutch and throw out bearing?

thanks again.

Well I guess anything is possible. A NEW trans properly installed by the Dealer or reputable shop should not have these kind of problems and, make it right if there is. If, however, you or a buddy did the install, then your on your own.

You state that this is a new unit....is it? I had this very same problem years ago with a non Nissan trans. We disasembled two used ones and mixed and matched shims, shafts and such and made a good one out of the two bad ones....point being.....popping out of gear as you discribe will, 90% of the time, be caused from worn parts or maybe in this case, improperly assembled internal transmission parts...If the pressure plate got beat up in the process of assembly, it would be hard or even impossible to shift.

Is the shop trying to say that something else is causeing this??

Thanks again for the response.

I had the clutch and throw out bearing replaced at a 'respectable' shop. They specialize in Nissan due to previous experience.

Currently the shop doesn't know why/what could be causing it. It's there again now (I took the mechanic out this morning and showed him this new 'pop out' feature) and I am awaiting the call. There is a leak of gear (transmission) oil as well which is only noticable when driving. The smell comes into the car. I'm not sure why this is happening now as well but could a lower level of fluid cause some funkiness with the gears??

thanks

"Respecticle" shops get greedy too. Any rebuilt or new trans will have some sort of garranty against faulty workmanship or parts. The shop would and should suck up the labor to r&r the trans to make it right. UNLESS....they got a used piece from who knows where and charged you for something you didn't get. I've seen this happen time and again.........my 2 sense

Thought the third time might be lucky but they still haven't found the problem. They are going to remove the transmission again monday and have another look. I'll keep you informed.

Do you know what could cause the smell of gear oil??

seems like 3 times in the shop for the same issue is too many. you gotta put your foot down with them and demand that they totally rebuild the transmission with NEW parts, or something that will ensure a fix, seeings how much time you have spent due to their inability to do it right the first time.
