Hi,

I have a 1990 4-door 4WD Pathfinder SE 3.0L (VG30E I beleive).

I'm having issues with my block heater... It doesnt produce any heat.

When I plug it in, there is no heat, and no sounds (it used to sound like a kettle when I plugged it in). So, I tested the prongs on the end of the cord for continuity. Nothing.

So, i've pretty much narrowed it down to the following:a) the heater element is burned outb) the cord is cut (or discontinuous somehow)c) the connection between the cord and the heater element is not sound.d) all of the above

My next step is to disconnect the heater element from the cord, and individually test each for continuity. I beleive the easiest way to access the heater is to remove the driver's side front tire and access the block through the wheel well. Is this correct? (the heater is in the farthest back frost plug on the driver's side).

Also, is the failure (burning out, becoming discontinuous, etc...) of a block heater element a common occurance?

Any theories/ideas on this would help a lot.

Thanks.

nissan never to my knowledge manufactured their car with a block heater. but as with any electric coiled heating element if it is old it is probably burnt out internally. I am not sure how yours is structured but if you can unplug the electrical cord from the unit do a continuity check on the terminals. there should be continuity between both terminals. if it is completely open the windings have burnt out inside.
