Hi guys,

I recently moved to bay area (Redwood City), and wanted to get any suggestions on best way to get my ca18det swapped s13 vert to pass emissions test out here.

NO smog gear currently installed, so guessing I'd fail visual inspection to start with. :gotme

Wondering what any of you would suggest best course of action for this.

Some possibilities:
1. Source some emission gear from DM ca18de powered vehicles and install

2. Swap out to some other engine that already has the gear (NOT favorite option!!!)

3. Work around the requirements: Figure out how to register somewhere else?

Please make suggestions.

Thank you!

Brother you likely picked the wrong state to try to do that in, the regulations there are stricter than anywhere else in the US. You can pass the actual testing yet still fail the visual if not exact and the test guy is a smart one.

Yeah, I know this state sucks for that...

I don't actually even know if a swapped engine is really OK, especially if it is something somewhat obvious like a LS1...

I'm running into this problem looking into moving for grad school :frown:

Since the KA and CA18 are both 4-bangers, you may be able to pass visual by throwing all of the emissions stuff on there and removing/covering anything in there that says CA18. If your inspector doesn't know Nissans very well they might not even notice that anything is off.

Not sure how I'm going to try to pass off a flat six as a KA, though

The usual standard for engine changes is that whichever of the car or engine is newer the emissions for that year must be hit FYI.
