There are a couple of factors that play into the deployment of the passenger airbag . The OCS (occupant classification sensor..a mat with a sensor under the cushion of the passenger seat), the SRS system (seatbelt restraint system ) and the airbag system itself. When you start up the car, the system goes to an 8 sec self check to energize the airbags. During that time, the light for the passenger airbag, located under the 3 center vents lights up then goes off. The OCS uses pressure and weight and takes into consideration if the seatbelt is locked into position to determine whether or not to deploy the airbag in the event of an front end collision.

There's only one way to find out and that's to run into a wall, which I wouldn't advise
In my case, since I installed race seats, once you disconnect any part of the SRS system (denoted by yellow connectors) the system is deactivated thus throwing a a dash light as well as the passenger light under the vents. Since they were able to clear that light, I'm wondering if I can throw my buddy's scanner on the system and clear it as well...
