when my fiance and i got our vert last august, the top didn't go up or down mechanically. the guy we bought it from said he took all the parts out. i'm wondering what all i need to find to restore the mechanical operation. i have no idea where to start. i've never owned a convertible anything. manual operation of the top isn't unbearable, but i'd really like to get it back.

while i'm thinking of it, do the factory shop manuals for 240's cover convertibles too, or do i need a different manual for that? if so, does anyone know where i can find one?

thanks,-dexter

you need the convertible supplement and they are rare, they pop up on ebay once in a while. I've bid on a few but not with much luck. hitman and a few other members have them, and I ended up with the 1993 amendment to the convertible supplement but still no full supplement. anyway I'd have to know what he removed to tell you what you'd need. is the top itself still on there? can you manually raise and lower it?look in the holes behind the window, are the two giant hydraulic cylinders still there? they look like giant shocks. On the pass. side of your trunk is there a big pump?

well, i'll have to keep an eye out for the supplemental manual. i assume that means that i'm going to need a regular manual for the suspension and engine and everything not related to the convertible. is there a different manual for coupes and hatches?

i'll have to check for the pump in the trunk this weekend. there are no hydraulic cylinders behind the windows and there's nothing connected to the top's frame. i'll try to get some pictures this weekend too. hopefully that will help me get a better diagnosis fom you guys.

he probably removed the entire hydraulic system... you'll need at minimum a new pump, new actuators, and new lines, possible more depending on how it was removed and what other components were removed with it. once it stops working it actually makes it harder to raise and lower the top manually and it adds weight and takes up space so I guess it makes sense that he removed it.

Anyway I may be removing all those components from my car eventually so maybe we can work something out.

and btw yes a regular manual for the car, a convertible supplement for the convertible specific details, and if its a 93 or newer, an amendment to the supplement for some of the small details they changed, if you wanted to be comprehensive. realistically the 240sx fsm is available for DL a lot of places already, and you can probably borrow an FSM from someone on the board to get yourself straightened out. and hatchs + coupes have the same fsm.

thanks for all the info.

please do let me know when and if you decide to remove all of that stuff. i may or may not still be interested, but it's worth a shot.

do you know if there are cd versions of the manuals? as a DSM guy i can get a cd with all of the FSM for all years, models, and trims for about $15. i've not yet run across anything like that for 240's.

yeah I have a CD manual for mine I bought off ebay for like $7 before they were available for download. but you can get it free, just search around. The only CD's I've see only have one or two models on there, as far as we can figure out no one has scanned the convertible supplement up there. If I ever get one I'd like to have mine scanned.
