I have a 92 Q45 that I purchased new 85K ago and after doing my homework, I would be well-advised to have the chain guides replaced.

On the Yahoo group, there are two parts lists mentioned but I am not clear as to what parts should be ordered. One reference is to a kit from infinitipartsusa.com.

Has a list been posted in this forum?

ThanksKen K

Camshaft timing chains seldom need replacement, but it is good to have them on hand.

I would also skip the chains .

Doing chains add SO MUCH hi end labor

Are parts like that returnable if they are not needed? The two chains are almost 50% of the cost.

Daedalus,

One other list that I just found on the infinitiownersclub lists the following, which you do not:

2x 01121-04711 bolts for new guides4x 11051-60U04 cam end seals2x 13021-60U00 crank/cam sprockets2x 13094-60U00 guide bolts1x 15072-60U00 bracket oil pump1x 15043-60U00 crank/timing sprocket2x 13270-60U00 valve cover gasket

(hope I got all of the numbers correct...!)

Are these unnecessary?

ThanksKK

Also chains are known to lat a long time.and like I said add more labor than they add parts cost.

Good catch on the bolts--yes, you need new bolts for the guides too, but I can't confirm part numbers where I'm at right now. In fact, the "longer tensioner bolts" in my list might actually be the guide bolts (mislabled), since they're the only bolts that are longer, and because there are 4 of them. Call Joe to confirm.

Most of the other stuff you don't need unless you do the chains, which aren't needed, as Maxnix and Fred pointed out. I don't even know what the oil pump bracket is honestly. Sprockets *should* be OK, but you won't know until you take off the front cover and look at the crankshaft sprocket. If it's good, the cam sprockets are probably good too.

I checked my records...the 4 bolts are the correct ones for the guides. But the name came from Infiniti. The label that came with the bolts I recieved says BOLT-TENSIONER, but in my notes I wrote "Long straight-guide bolts for thicker guide stack-up".

Daedalus,

Thanks for your reply. (I am working on your pastrami sandwich in the other forum).

I am a bit confused about which bolts we are talking about. I noted the absence of two bolts in my last post; you mention 4 bolts.

any comments about the other parts that were listed in the list of parts I posted that were not included in your original list?

ThanksKen K

The 4 I mentioned were in my original list, which I'm pretty sure are the correct ones you need for the newer guides. The 2 in your list I can only guess at, but they might be for the tensioner itself. I think the tensioner bolts can be reused. Again, most of the other parts you listed are needed if you're doing the chains. Rocker cover gaskets don't apply to the 1st gens, so I'm not sure how that got on there, unless it's just 2 tubes of RTV.

Call Joe at Scottsdale AZ Infiniti. They have the complete kit and he will lead you through what you need and what you do NOT need. It will also be the best price in the country, maybe a third less than a dealer. You do not need the chains, they will probably go 200k. I did my 92 in Jan at 128k. Chains were fine. Oil pump bracket is probably in there if you need to replace the oil pump, you probably don't. Good idea to rplace the GUIDES on the oil pump at the same time, same issue. Have the mechanic do hot/cold oil pressure tests BEFORE taking the rngine apart to dtermine if your pump has been damages by the guides, once you are in the motor and you see some damage at the pump area it will be impossible to tell if the pump is damaged or it is only cosmetic rubbing damage. If you can get the car to T3 in Atlanta that is your absolute best bet for quality and price. There has been mentioned a fellow on the West Coast that is good and I can give you a dealer in DC, good quality, but not cheap.

Thanks. I will call Joe in the morning to discuss the parts list with him and see what his restocking fee is for any unused parts.

I am thinking about replacing the water pump, radiator hoses, front seal while we are there.

Appreciate your thoughts about the oil pump.

Any other thoughts?

ThanksKen K

Oil pumps are pretty robust, but a broken guide can lead to the chain cutting into the pump if I remember right. A good thing would be to check your oil pressure hot at idle before you open the car up. Should be right near 14psi min. About the chains, they really should last quite a while, and I really can't rationalize doing them at "only" 85k. If it was just the parts cost, no biggie to me, but that is a heck of a lot of extra labor. BUT if your valve covers are leaking oil, then go for it. Slide your hand around the rear corners of both covers and see if your hand comes up grimy. If my car lasts to 250k I'll replace my chains...I figure the covers will be leaking by then and it won't be much extra work anyway.Front oil seal is a must, like Q45tech mentioned, and the part only costs like $5.

I missed this originally

"Good idea to rplace the GUIDES on the oil pump at the same time, same issue."

Ok - so is this a 90-93 issue again - or all years? What mileage are these in danger of needed replacement? Wish the FSM was online :-)

Is there a definative thread on OIL PUMP Guides like there is with the chain guides?

SoCal:

It's a good idea <as long as you are in tehre> to put on new oil pump chains and oil pump chain guides.

That is primarily as good practice to reduce the likelyhood of oil pump problems to near nil.

Understood .... however; since Im no longer going take out motor style and starting off with a 0 mile motor ..... circa 1994 ... I was curious if the OIL PUMP guides "issue" was the same as the chain guides ... wrong material from factory kinda thing. Since I hopefully WONT have to be in there anyways, was wondering if there was also a NICO known, but NOT known by the dealer techs issue for the oil pump guides.

BTW - my motor arrived last thursday .... and she's purrrrdy! [except for that waterneck thing :-) ]

There is no upgrade part for oil chain guide, but it is all plastic but so short it couldn't jump and if it did so what. The issue is a stretched chain is a weak chain [to some degree].

It only adds 30 minutes to the guide job so we change them just for insurance...............since the chain is floppy by 150k.

That said remember we have a 94Q customer with 296,000 miles and the front cover has never been off........runs well.

Hello All,

I'm new member to this great site. I recently purchased a 91 Q45. I would appreciate greatly if someone could let me know exactly what needs to be replace regarding the timing chain guard(s) in order to protect my investment. i.e. what are the specific parts and parts no? estimated cost for the parts? Again, thank you for responding.

Well this thread should clear up some of your inquiries.

There are numerous threads concerning the chain guides. Utilize that search button. Hours of reading in there.

Where are you located at? T-3 in good ole Atlanta, GA is the place to go for 1st gen Qs. Q45tech and his Posse are the pros. Just from what I have read, at T-3 a chain guide job will run you around $1200. Not a bad deal at all. Remember, these are guys are proffesionals. Welcome to NICO.

Thanks for the reply. I'm located in Honolulu. There is little or no support for the Q45 that I know of out here on our island. So I will have read up on NICO to find what I need.

In the meantime, if anyone knows the specific timing chain guide that I need to replace please let me know. I have a diagram of the parts, but would like confirmation about which parts absolutely need replacing? Is it the slack side guide alone or tension side guide? or both?

Time Chain Slack Side Guide: Right 13091-60U01 and Left 13091-60U11

Time Chain Tension Side Guide: Right 13085-60U01 and Left 13085-60U11

Any additional parts that needs to be replace? e.g. chain tensioner?

Thank you for your patience. I'm new at this.

P.S. By the way, anyone have a 1991 Q45 OEM mechanic manual they are willing to sale?

You have to read through this entire thread...there are a lot of parts that should be replaced. The tension side guide is now 2 pieces, not 1. Parts will cost a few $hundred from one of our sponsors, or a lot more than that from the Nimitz dealership.

Kimrober is also in Honolulu...you guys need to work on finding a good independent for Nissans.

Are the part #'s listed above identical for a second generation VH45DE (1994) I may change them at some point in the future anyway.

See my post near the bottom of this thread for what T3 used when they replaced my guides. As far as I know the same parts apply to all 90-96 Q45s.
