Looking into new timing chain guides for my VH and I ran across this:

13085-60U01 and 13085-60V11, 13091-60U01 and 13091-60U11.

These are left and right timing guides, but I'm not positive if the only difference is in the years, and if so, will the newer parts work? I've heard that the older ones are plastic-backed, and thus weaker than the newer ones which are metal-backed. Any help?

you cant buy the older parts, even though they may still have a legit part number when you type them into the book they will just have the superceeded number.
