parking lights turn on when unlocking M35

hi, at a parking lot yesterday there was a 2008 infiniti M35x parked next to mine. same color, year, everything. the diff was that when he did unlock the car, his headlights and the rear lights did come on, too - providing much needed illumination to a rather uneven ground.. i called Infiniti, they didn't know - they just said "it must be aftermarket". even if it was, i want to find out about such an upgrade/installation. any help on this is much appreciated. thank you

There is an option called 'welcome lighting' on the newest models (not sure it includes headlamps), but that was not available back then. Possibly he has an after-market alarm system that includes this feature, or he did some wiring patches so that whatever makes the interior lights come on when unlocking now includes exterior lights. Infiniti was correct - no such option was available from the factory or the dealer.

I have a 06 Fuga 450GT so not sure how much applies here or how different they are..

But with mine, if I go up to it when it's locked and press the lock button on the remote: Once will just flash the indicators (as per normal locking). Twice the spotlights and taillights come on and three times the headlights will turn on. Mine once did make the spotlights turn on auto but no idea how! The remote trick works fine for me tho. Headlights probably need to be on auto if they aren't already..
