HELLO,
I AM NEW TO THE FORUM SO PLEASE FORGIVE ANY ERRORS-
I OWN A VERY LOYAL 1996 NISSAN PICK UP, STANDARD CAB WITH A 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANS AND A BENCH SEAT-MY PARKING BRAKE HANDLE IS AN UNDER DASH MOUNT -RIGHT OF THE STEERING WHEEL-
I AM HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING THE DASH HANDLE CABLE TO REAR BRAKE CABLE ( OLD CABLE IS APPRX 48 INCHES LONG WITH SWEDGED ENDS) -IT SEEMS #36402 , USUALLY RECCOMENDED DOESNT FIT AS PER MECHANIC,-
I THINK THERE IS A DIFFERENT CABLE SOLD WHEN BRAKE HANDLE IS NOT ON
transmission HUMP-? WOULD VIN NUMBER HELP IN IDENTIFYING CORRECT CABLE ?
I CANT PASS INSPECTION UNTIL I GET IT REPAIRED SO ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED -
THANK YOU

Welcome to NICO! Hopefully you get your ride up and going again soon!

Is that under dash place the stock location? (Sorry, I'm not super familiar with the trucks).

For what its worth, you may be onto something. You might have got a universal kit on accident.
I suggest looking at rockauto.com to see if you can find a part pictured that looks like yours.

Some more well versed truck members will likely show up and help you out.

thank you for your reply-
i dont know if under dash is the usual parking brake location of the majority of the trucks manufactured-i assume most were automatics and they had the transmission mount option- the 5 spd seems to be a cost item on the bill of sale-
i will look at the rock auto web site and see what they have available -
here's hoping

You can also check the factory service manual to make sure everything is where its supposed to be. They also might have adjustment or some other pointers.

Worst case scenario, you can just get new cables from the dealership.

I had a '93 4cyl AT 2wd,, and the parking brake was under the dash to the right of the Steering Column, as you describe.

You'll probably need to order by VIN # to get the correct cable length.

This you may allready know: The parking brake is adjusted while stopped, by pulling the parking brake handle ~ out & In ~ a few time's, without the brake pedal being applied, or at least that's the way it was on my '93.

Good Luck

thank you for all your posts-
its good to know the under dash is a standard location -that narrows it down quite a bit for me -
the richmond nissan dealership oem parts diagram , using my vin # shows a much different cable than the one i have -the rock auto exploded view shows a cable very similar to mine with a 45 deg angle firewall bracket made by wagner-it seems it is sold by advanced auto parts too which gives a possible visual for a match-rock auto also shows it as the only front cable for the 95-97's so i figure its not a fluke and is correct--
the NICO repair manual exploded view shows a cable most
similar to the rock auto-

thank you for your advice -
i think you have me back in the game
