My check engine light recently came on and I did the onboard diagnostics. I got 10 slow and 3 fast flashes. I looked on http://www.ka24development.com and it said it was my P/N switch. What does this part do and how should i go about fixing it? Thanks.

it doesn't really do anything.. it just lets the ecu know that the car is not in gear.

All you can do to "fix" it is to get another sensor and swap them out in the transmission.

as long as your car starts fine i would not worry about the p/n switch. is your car manual or auto. if its manual did you do a auto to manual conversion? i ask because manual cars dont have a p/n switch.

Alrighty, this just got weird.

s13sr20chris, i've read enough of your posts to know that you know your stuff, but my car is a manual 5 and it has the P/N switch...and it's always been a manual.

I did a test to see what it does: cruise control set, pull it out of gear, and the engine revs to high heaven.

There is a difference between the sensors used on the auto and manual. The auto has a P/N switch, it sends a value when either in park or nuetral. The manual has only a neutral switch. I'm pretty sure on this... I just completed my own manual swap 5 or 6 months ago.

Like I said, all it does is let the ecu know the car is not in gear. Pretty useless... jsut don't pull the car out of gear without using the clutch on cruise control and you'll never know the difference

hmmm, one of a few things. the ecm is refering to the neutral switch, your ecm is from an auto model, or you may have have misread the code. i am putting my money on number one. you may have a failed neutral switch. it threads into the side of the transmission next to the reverse switch. its easy to test. it should change its continuity state based on neutral or out of neutral.
