I have a 2007 Nissan Versa and my check engine light came on. I went to autozone so they can give me a diagnostic on the problem. The code came up as p0850/faulty Park Neutral Position Switch (PNP) switch.

I have a manual transmission so I was suprised that there is a PNP switch exists for a manual transmission car.

What does a PNP switch do in a manual car? Where can I find the PNP switch in the car? and how do i replace/repair the PNP switch.

Thank you very much for your help!!

Ok so I just dealt with doing all this a couple weeks ago. That switch turns the reverse lights on when you put the transmission into reverse. Its a mechanical plunger switch with a GREEN two lead connector on it. If you remove the battery tray you will easily be able to see it on the transmission. You can spot it without removing the battery and tray but its a lot easier to get a wrench in there if you do. Nobody anywhere seemed to know the exact part number for the 1.8l 6 speed trans- not even the local dealership parts manager. Lucky for you I already did the leg work and found it! It's a pretty quick fix once you know what you need and where it goes. If you need a pic of the switch let me know and I'll try to post one.

Thank You Very Much!!! I was able to locate the part after I removed the battery. It is such a relief to know that it is not a major problem and it is easy to fix. I did call several dealerships to ask about the part called the pnp switch and they had no idea what it does for a manual transmission gearbox, so the link to the part is also a major help.

Thanks so much your help is greatly appreciated!!

I had this issue. 49500 miles on 2011 versa hatchback m/t.

I was driving at 9 oclock last night. big ol' CEL pops on. Pulled over no fluids dropping, nothing making noise so i scratched head and limped it home. Did the diagnostic pull engine code from the versa forums, pulled up a 0850 flashing code and searched for it. Not many people have this issue. If you have an security plus extended warranty it should be covered and the part should be a day or two away from a dealership.

However on the manual transmission you are looking at part number 32005-00qae as courtesy likes to remove the last 5 digits to hide the real part number on the versa hatch m/t its called a neutral position switch.
