The miles are fine as long as maintenance records available. The bike being a Honda Shadow is about indestructible, build quality wise unless in the hands of the worst humans evaR!!1

Is the bike for you? Or your step dad? Or both?

not for me...

its for my mom and step dad.... shhh.. its that mid-age bs

a few of their friends ride and because they wont shut up about how fun it is... (and because the time period they grew up, their teens years were of the rebel bikers faze) they got their old dreams back and are gunna go though with it... not something i want them really doing, i dont trust peoples driving around here.. but hey, its what they want, and since they support me and my car even though they dont like me racing, i will show the same support back.. i just wanna be sure they are not getting ripped off

that's cool, but, I don't know, last time i checked 9k miles on a bike was a lot...

is the shadow a sporty high rpm one, or one of the newer chopper ones?

No it's not alot of miles for a used bike. The model year and miles put on per year tell a lot.

My 98 cbr600 has 12k miles on it. It'll still blow the doors off of 99.9% of anything I encounter, and it's a freakin middleweight. Maintenance/upgrades are key, that's all.

that price is pretty decent, as long as it is a fairly recent model with good maintenence history. My friend was looking into one and he was finding recent ones in the 4k+ range, and most of the ones he found around 2k were late 80 early 90s models. But they might just be high around here. Mileage is not very bad.

Change the chain, check the rear tire, and make sure it has been serviced (same way a car is), and it should be fine.

My buddy bought a 95 Kawi ZX750 for $3000 w/ 17,3xx on it. He got raped...

Make them, MAKE them get proper saftey gear. Helmet and jacket/gloves for sure, pants later if they can afford it. Take it from me, if I wasn't wearing a helmet I would be dead, no jacket and I would have been in the hospital much longer. Try to instill them with a respect for the motorcycle and the importance of proper saftey gear. That said, a motorcycle is the most fun they will ever have (besides conciving you - ha!) too bad I'll never touch one again.PS and yes you/they should be aware that other people's driving is horrid.

Just thought I'd chime in here. 9k on any bike isn't much especially if it is well mantained, most modern bikes have service intervals for 12k i.e. major tune up w/ valve adjustment. Some even go longer of course some highly tuned factory bikes require these adjustments at around 8k but being that a honda shodaw is a cruiser in very mild tune, 9k is nothing. My father has 4 bikes with all over 9k. Infact his newest bike, a 2002 BMW r1150rs has 12k w/ no major problems to mention. He also has a 1977 BMW 1000rs w/ 77k, although that had a rebuilt @ 70k that ain't too shabby. I think the most impressive is his 1991 Honda Transalp that has 40k w/ just genereal maintanance and no signs of getting tired. Believe me many of those were very hard miles racked up by yours truly. My point is 9k is nothing to shake a stick at. That's all, later.

Tell them not to be weiners. Go for an R1 or something. =p

Just playin. But do tell them to get good riding gear... especially if this is a first bike for them.
