for those of us who are stuck at computers all day - whether it be for work, for school, or just because you're addicted to the internet - there's a great website that i've been using for about a year or so for my music needs.

http://www.pandora.com

basicly, it's a standalone music player that's completely free, commercial free, and only plays music you like. here's the link for The Music Genome Project© that started the whole thing:

i listen to it all the time. i hope you enjoy it too.

another site that's good for this sort of thing is http://last.fm/ - i like it as it's a little more community-oriented than pandora. but i do switch back and forth when one or the other seems to run out of new content for me.

I've never had good luck with the music genome deal. Every time I input a song I like, it suggests bunch of songs with musical MECHANICS that are similar but sounds that couldn't be more different. It fails to capture the atmosphere of music.

I put in something really heavily atmospheric, harmonic, vocal-centric and multi-layered and it spits out a bunch of paper-thin acoustic folk guitar with reedy-voiced stereotypical folk lyricists because they both have folk influence and oddball time.

If you put in really common music you get decent results. But with genuinely interesting sounding music, the system fails to find real matches.

I had the same problem when I tried it about a year and a half ago (maybe two). They might have changed it up a bit since then though. I listen to music thats pretty far away from mainstream, and it never found any band with a sound I liked. Actually, it never found a band with a sound anywhere close to the original one I typed in.
