Can anybody help me out? I'm trying to figure out how to get video files off of my wife's camera. She wants to send them to somebody in China, but there's very little to work with.

It's all AVCHD. I see .bdm files, .mpl files, and .mps files all with modification dates at about the time we were shooting video yesterday.

Not a video wizz but I know that stuff needs to be converted to useful formats.

OR the person in China can get their hands on VLC and they should be able to play AVCHD files.

What I would do is get VLC and see how it works with the AVCHD files; if it works well then the person in China should DL VLC. If it sucks in VLC then use VLC to convert the AVCHD files to H.264/MPEG-4.
