Hey, weird question here: Has anyone ever tried painting their turbine housing? I am doing a rebuild and hybrid on mine tomorrow, and just thought it would look a little cleaner if I painted the turbine housing with some black paint. I know they make super high temp spray paints for engines and headers (1500'), does anyone think that this will hold up, or is it even worth doing? Also, since this is my post, I will save one. The Nismo mounts (as we all know) create clearance problems on a lot of strut bars. But it is my understanding that the people who did this, did it with the three piece set. Unfortunately, I was able to only get the engine mounts, so I bought the JGS trans mount. Has anyone tried this combo? How well does it clear the strut bars (what kind of bar do you have)?

Nothing in a rattle can is gonna hold up to the heat of a turbine housing at WOT.

Ceramic coating is about your only option. phoenixturbo.com did mine for $60.

they make spay paint for engine blocks and such which if you follow the curing process is good up to 2000 degress or something like that. and we messured the temp of the turbo on my friends sti the otherday after doing a hand full of 1/4 mile passes and a highway run and it was only around 500 degrees. we used one of those laser surface temp guns. so i would assume it should hold if you do it right.

Watch dyno runs and you will see that the manifold/turbo glow towards the end of the run and cool off immediatly afterwards. Its hard for such a small amount of metal to hold so much energy for very long. Similar to holding a lot of marbles.

^^

i enjoy the porche video's where they glow white.

as for your question... i would imagine that most of those paints would chip and crack after a few times down a windy road from the thermal changes

Those are all good points, and I may either just get over it (since I will use a blanket) or get it ceremic coated. Does anyone know anything about the mount situation?

another option would be black satin or turbo x from techline. its not a rattle can job, looks like spray gun'd on. they say its a ceramic coating with protection upto 2000 f. not sure about reliability, but im cleaning up my exhaust housing right now and picking up some of the turbo x black.

How much? I have everything apart right now, as I am doing a write-up. I would like to paint it, but if the price is too high, then I will just leave it, like I say, I will be using the blanket, as I hear it is good for scavenging power.Anyone on the mounts, oh, and how long does JGS take to ship, my Nismos should be here tomorrow. Then I will take my turbine housing and oil pan and weld the wastegate and add a bung, respectively.

You guys understand that ceramic coating on a turbine housing will be no more than $80... and it works FOR SURE...!! Why even chance doing some weird crap that ISN'T going to be inside the turbine housing, hence it isn't doing its job of keeping heat OUT of the metal....

Just get your housings ceramic coated and leave it at that....

Cory,

Fanatic, I trust your opinion. Is it better to ceramic coat or use a blanket? What are the pros and cons?

ceramic coating works and looks good as well. A blanket or wrap looks like you couldn't afford the ceramic route. Just do it!

Hey, maybe somethone can help me with this one. Does a whole rotating assembly need to be balanced. I was told by a turbo rebuilder that it was just the wheels that needed to be done. Supposedly doing the whole assembly is just a hipo option. But some of the guys here don't agree, so who is right?

I'll take this one. We balance our blackhawks main and tail rotors every time we add evven the slightest amount of weight and thats on somthing that ways in at just about a ton.

So picture this, you have the turbine wheel/compressor wheel mounted on the shaft and torqued inplace. Say the compressor wheel needs .9 grams removed from a certain spot, what happenes if you move the compressor wheel after that spot has been shaved? You get an unbalanced condition.

Can you live with a slight unbalance, yes, but it will lessen the life of the bushings/bearings by almost half I'd say.

Pay for the balance.

WD, in a previous post, you said you don't ever balance them when you put them together.
