Ok i have a question i want my stock SE S14 rims painted gun metal i went to a shop they gave me a $200 quote, I think its too much for just 4 rims? Can I do it myself with some spraint paint. I know how to paint, ive bee doing it for 10 years. But my question is, do rims need as much care as the body of the car, sand, blast, prime and few layers of paint, or just some spray paint will do? Anyone here did that? I think i saw some people with black se rims, i wonder how they did it.

Thanks

I painted my wheels one afternoon. I didn't have any replacements or anything.

All I did was lightly sand down the wheels and then sprayed them with rustoleum paint. Worked like a charm.

Look at the page in my sig to see how they turned out.

I used a $4 can of Duplicolor wheel paint back in Dec. To prep then, I just cleaned them with wheel cleaner and a brillo pad for about 10 minutes a wheel. Everyone was telling me that they would peel and chip like no other since I didn't sand them....Well it's been 6 months now (3 or which the wheels were covered with salt because of winter) and 5000 miles are on them and they still are chip free. Here's a pic of the wheels with the $4 paint I got at autozone:

I busted out the masking tape as well. And the color I used is called black night metallic #7250. It has sparklies in it.

The paint won't stick to it because it's too smooth. Rough it up a little bit with sandpaper or a sanding wheel, just make sure you do the whole wheel or else you'll have spots.

Did you guys at least take the wheel off the car and do it? Or did you just tape over the lugnuts?

id just take off the wheels when i spray em, that way it doesnt drip at all. As long as u do it light enough and with enough coats, it shouldnt drip even on the car, but id rather not take the chance of getting black overspray on my white car anyway

Off topic, but does the GAFB in your location stand for Grissom Air Force Base?

I took the wheel off the car, one at a time(took me like 5 or 6 hours on night), then put masking tape over the tire and used a razor blade to cut the excess tape from around the silver lip, if your doing the whole wheel you dont really have to tape the tire off b/c once the paint dries on the tire it just flakes off.

btw the wheels look alot better when they're clean and have some tire shine on, theyre really dirty in that pic

Do you have to sand or anything once they're painted? Or what do you do about overspray?

There is no overspray if you mask it right.

By overspray I mean paint particles that dry before the paint hits the wheel, which gives it an orange peel texture. How do you keep that away?

It happens all the time for me when I use spraypaint, even with light coats.
