i tried painting the plastic trim that goes around the shifter and the cd player, it turned out like s***, twice!

first time i washed it with soap and water, scuffed it up with a scotch brite pad, spray with dupli color adhesion promoter, then with dupli color vinyl paint. it came out pretty nasty, their was runs and bubbles and it wasnt smooth at all, like it was misted on.

2nd attempt, i sandblasted, but it wouldnt even take the paint off, i had to wire wheel a little bit off and blast again. i painted again, this time i tried a few different ways and it still turned out like s***. i've done a ton of painting and it turned out perfect everytime, this was my first attemp on plastic and using vinyl paint. what am i missing?

even the spray from the can didnt seem right, it would like mist on instead of laying a nice even coat, i thought maybe just a bad can, but i sprayed the 2 pieces that lay under the hood at the bottom of the windshield, and the long single piece that goes right across and both came out perfect.

Did you try to cover it in one layer or do multiple layers?
If you glob on the paint all at once, it's gonna run and turn out like s***.

yea i did layers, i done 2 coats of adhesion and 3 coats of paint the first time. its was almost like something was repelling the paint away from it.
2nd time i done 1 light coat of adhesion, then slammed it on from like 5" away and it came out better then the first.
usually i'll do a very light coat, then another light coat, and a final coat, each coat getting better and better.

actually i think after i scuffed it the first time i sprayed brake cleaner on it tho, then hit it with the air, wonder if that would be the issue.

Plastic paint does funny things, and you may have to do coats that are almost too thick, in order for it to properly level and all.

I suggest doing it the wrong way, and sanding it, and then using standard rustoleum spray.

Yeah, use something like this

If you prep it just like you did and spray this stuff, it turnns out great.

Kinda hard to see, but it had a nice textured feel and dried even. Zero runs or scuffs.

Try SEM products. I've heard a lot of good things about them.
