Hey guys, just looking for a little paint and body quick advice. On my Qx4, I had it resprayed jet black about 2 years ago but both my front and rear bumpers have some accident damage and random paint chipping.

Since I cant afford to get someone else to do it. I figured I may try it myself. I have a brand new HLVP gravity fed gun withr egulator and 1.4mm nozzle. And I found this DIY paint that seems I could do the job for around $100 if I buy all there stuff, maybe less if anyone has suggestions.

I want to use duplicolors color shop paint system

http://www.duplicolor.com/products/paintshop.html

My question is technique and prep. My bumpers took a few good hits and the paint either flaked off or chipped off, would those need filler to bring back level with the paint around it, or would simply sanding smooth be enough?? I slightly fear the plastic underneath may also have these spider cracks in a few spots, would that affect painting or prep at all.

Since I was only doing the front and rear bumpers, I may aswell remove them from the car. Does that pose any troubles with the fravity fed gun??

Any help Id appreciate, I can take pics of the damage possibly in the light if it makes a difference, Id like to keep this cheap, Id just like to keep a non damaged look to my car here lol

Thanks

Really take it all down to bare plastic??

Would it be best to use there primer, or can I stick with spray can primer and sand it to perfection before painting??

Why would painting over the old paint be bad?? Or why would it need to be removed I guess, the front bumper is pretty bad and I probly will end up sanding the whole thing, but the rear only has a slight bit of samage on the right rear...

Just curious

Thanks

Also, the puty I use since I like how it sands is Color Flo from Carquest, would that matter with automotive paint?? It says lightweight automovtive filler ont he can but I dont know if it affects anything.

Any tips for a glass finish clear coat without wetsanding??

you can leave the old paint on there if you want... but you'll need to sand it with course grit, then fine grit... then finer grit etc.

the only reason i don't suggest it is because for someone who doesn't do a lot of painting, it will be hard to make the chipped spots you mentioned look good, because the filler isn't magic and doesn't just do all the work for you... making it blend in properly takes skill

it'd be best to use their primer.... but cans are fine... cans are harder to make look good of course

for glass like finish.... well, you have a gun... that's step one.... step two is practice

Dont use that duplicolor stuff
it is garbage.
its a step above rattle can, but not much..
i just used this stuff on a bike for a customer, (His request that i use that paint), and it comes out like a rattle can job.

I'll Never use it again. Besides, when you add up costs.. its 25ish a can, you need 3 cans at least. Primer, Base, Clear
that's 75 bucks. add 25 to that and buy some real paint and real clear and your outcome will MUCH better.

E7, What brand(s) of paint and paint guns do you recommend? Sounds like you paint pretty often and I'd like to get more into it.

At the shop, i used to use all Sata guns. that's all that we've used,
but i've recently bought myself a couple Harbor freight Gravity feed guns for 15bucks! lol when they break or wear out i buy another!

but when its time to get serious, i use this MatCo Tools gun i picked up a while back.
When it comes to gun choice, yeah a good gun will pay off, but you can do most not so serious jobs with a harbor freight gun

To me the paint thats on my bumper looks really THICK, how would I strip the front bumper entirely of paint easily?? Or should I just sand these areas and paint away since Im not going for perfection anyways....

The way I would do it, is to remove the paint from the areas where the paint has chipped, and featheredge(smooth out the paint edge into a seamless transition) the areas where the paint is good. make everything smooth, and just repaint.

a DA sander would help your situation a good bit.
