Well since i had advanced auto coupons and they had a deal on the special black rubberizing underbody paint 2 for $7, so i painted pretty much everywhere in the underbody where there was none of that special black protective paint, and over any rust.

Steps i did.

I did sand the drums down really good with 60 grit since mine were pretty rusty on the sides, then i took a rag with mineral spirits and wiped them down. Once this paint cures im painting them with chrome enamel.

Also when painting the drums i masked off the studs with painters tape.

My underbody wasnt bad at all really even though theres alot of salt and gravel on the roads here in the winter in PA.

But there was places with the exposed metal without the black protective paint, and then other areas like the axles had rust on them.

also painted up front, lower control arms, underbody etc, like i said, everything that didnt have this coating or had rust.

for the axels and other parts than the drums, i wiped it quick with some mineral spirits and thats all you need, this paint will protect and go over it, its specially made so you dont have to bust your a$$ sanding nooks and crannies.

End result. GREAT and cheap.

sorry dont got befores. but if you look under your car if you live somewhere, where it snows, and if you have 108k miles, you will see what it was like before.

PICS:

paint used

so go ahead, thoughts/comments/ whatever.

2 cans was like for the rear axles and drums and sh*t, i bought like a ton of them since i used them on my other car etc, depending how much rust you have or where the previous black coating has fell off, i used 3 for mine, so 3 or 4 should be fine.

Correct me if i'm wrong but once the rust is already there... there is pretty much no point in doing it, as it will continue to eat away under the paint.

Itll eat away to a point, but not giving it anymore water and salt to feed it definetely helps. Surface rust is pretty harmless

I did my underbody last year before winter as my car came form florida and had never been coated before

Yours looks pretty damn good and new to!!Good job

From the first pic it looks like you got that stuff all over your studs. Make sure you get all of it off before you put the wheels back on. The lugs won't torque properly if there is crap all over them. And if you didn't torque them, go get it done. It's 108ft/lbs. A wheel off is not a fun. If you didn't get it all over your studs......oops sorry.

It looks like he taped over the studs prior to painting.

yeah you can see it pretty clearly in the pictures that theres something over the studs. first thing i did before i started any sanding, is taped over the studs with painters tape

edit: and mikey178, it says on the can that the black stuff is paintable, but i will let it cure like 7 days, then scuff it up a little with some sandpaper and run it over with mineral spirits, and give it like 3 or 4 coats of the chrome enamel.

That looks nice, are you going to go over it again or do you just use one coat with that?

What brand of jacks are those and how much would four cost?

1 coat should be enough as this is special, tough, resistant paint. i just did 1 coat, need to touch up some spots though later.

and the jacks, come in a box of 2, i got them at harbor freight, they are the 3 ton set, it will say on the box, 3ton, 6ton etc, and they cost around 13 or 15$, so you'd need 2 boxes which would be like 25-30ish dollars for 4

looks great for now.... I don't feel like that's gonna hold up too well though for some reason. Let us know though; I'd love to hear otherwise
