Recently bought this new truck. It has been repainted, but I didn’t care because it is supposed to be more of a work truck. I have just noticed this on the hood of the truck, and only there, the paint feels almost like sandpaper if you run your hand across it and if you look very close, you can see what appear to be grains of (apparently) rust almost embedded everywhere in the paint. Close up view follows. What the heck is going on and can it be fixed?

I bet he painted over rust, now it's coming through the paint.
Sand it down!

That is probably going to be the best bet. I mean, it is supposed to be a work/haul truck, but I don't want surface rust and crap all over it. It's weird because the hood is like that, the sides are obviously repainted but not rusting, and certain panels on the bed look factory. Must have just gotten it touched up where it was rusting. The re-paint quality looks like your typical MAACO discount special by the way.

If you don't care, I would honestly strip it down and paint it with bed liner in a spray can. The stuff covers any flaws....

That's what happens to paint if you only coat once or twice and don't use any primer. It's amazing there isn't any bubbling going on.

Damn, that sucks...but even if there was a warranty, it would only apply for the person that owned the truck at the time it was painted if im not mistaken. Not too sure what other shops warranties are like though.

Other than that, yeah it can be easily fixed. The paint would have to be stripped to the metal, rust sanded out, etc.

Didn't get any sort of paperwork. I bought the truck for way under bluebook with the understanding that it needed some work, I just hadn't noticed the paint as being one of those areas. At least I won't have to worry too much about matching the paint or anything because it's not supposed to be pretty. My most recent discovery is that the oxygen sensor is missing, there is just a bolt in the manifold port.

Are you sure that isn't just the EGR pipe bung? Or is it down under the car?

If it's just the hood of the truck and not anywhere else you could always just go to a u-pull it lot and get a hood the same color, depending on what kind of truck it is a hood the same color (appears to be white) should be fairly easy and cheap to find.

BTW what's the make/model/year of the truck? Some of the older full size fords and dodge's have a real tendency to rust in certain spots.

The plugged area I'm seeing is after the Y-pipe, under the car in front of the cat. It would not be the first thing I've found that has been tinkered with.

It's a '95 Chevy K1500. I've been to a couple of the junkyards in my area looking for other parts, they are really picked over on pickups (being that pickups and especially older, cheaper ones are very popular in this area), but one yard said I could leave a request to be called if they got a new truck in. Luckily I found my parts that time, probably because it was a bracket that was on every Chevy/GM truck from 1988 to 1995 that had a gas engine, I still only found one truck with the part though.

I might just rock this hood until I fix a few other things and then worry about getting it blasted and repainted. I may be able to get access to some professional equipment and a booth and I wouldn't mind giving it a try myself.
