Ok, I dropped off my 1995 240 (with s13 blacktop sr20det recently installed), at an auto/body shop to get painted Silver last week. They said the car would be done by Tuesday which is today. I was having some problems with my Maxima stalling, so I go over there at 8:45am this morning and ask how much it would be to install a new fuel filter. I also ask if the car will still be ready today...he says "yes later on today." I ask to look at the car (expecting to see it's progress)...when I go over to it, it basically looks the same (they took one dent out though), but I brang the car in primered (needs to be reprimered though...been primered for 1 yr). Now is it possible to do a GOOD paint job in half a day???!! That's what theyre saying they're going to do. I thought new primer had to cure overnight, etc. Now I brang my own paint and I know it's good quality (Chromabase by Dupont). But if they are just going to rush the job and not let things cure properly I want to know ahead of time if I am being ripped off. I am paying 1300 total. Also I have a carbon fiber hood, and I just need it clear coated. But the bumper will need to be cut to fit the front mount intercooler.

And they act like this can all be done in like 6 hours. Is this possible for a good paint job? Or should I yank my car out of there now.

Sure they can do a good job in 6 hours but from my experience, just regular air drying won't harden the paint to the point I'd feel safe driving it in 6 hours. It'll be dry to the touch but if you stick your fingernail in it, you can feel it's still a wee soft.

Well, I am having my car painted also except I am having the spoiler holes welded and have the car repainted the same white, with some body work done also, dings mostly and it is only costing me 1000. But I am not sure about 6 hours unless they are baking the car, I am not sure though.

Yeah as long as they have a heat room they can have it cured to drivable condition in that time. I still would baby it for a day or so.

haha my bro had the reverse problem, he was having his astro shaved and body kit molded in, well in short, it took 4 months to do it all, and now, a year later, the welds cracked, the fiberglassed kit is falling off, and the paint looks like ***, the paint was NEVER good, so he just took it home when he could, haze and all..........worst experience in hs life.....lol

it as a whole doesnt look bad, just when you get close, so i dont wanna hear anything about rice or anything:pface

Update: 4/9/03

Ok yesterday when I went to check on my car (they said they would suppoesdly be done yesterday too), they had just gotten started on my car, just covering up a dent with like bondo stuff. And he told me he would paint it that day (I was there at 6pm, yeah right).

My husband calls today to see if the car is ready and he says: "I cant work on it, because it's raining, it will be done tomorrow."What the heck does that mean...so if it rains for a month will he make no money? Do you guys think he intends to paint my car outside?? Because when I dropped by yesterday and saw him working on the car, he was working on it outside. He says he has an oven too, but I didnt see one. The shop has tooons of car there, and I didnt see much room for him to work on the car inside. If he intends to paint my car outside (thus that's why he cant work on it when it rains), then I would assume this is unprofessional and I should yank my car asap right?

All the materials to paint a car with PPG quality paints and clear coats only amounts to a wee over $300. I've done it before so I know.

As was stated before, $1300 is dirt cheap to get your car painted. Most shops charge $3000 and up...way up. You can't paint a car outside. There is too much crap floating around the air and it'll make a mess out of the paint. Remember, you get what you pay for.

My advise, run for the hills...and take your car with you.

all the misgivings you've had, and described, should have been enough to take your car somewhere else. i think it is possible for you to get a good paint job for $1300 by someone with a better facility and isn't so damn shady about giving you information. red flag i suppose. get your car out of there! quick!

(man, i'm looking forward to getting my car painted allright :()

if he runs a business then he wont try to do a bad job, and painting it outside would be a bad job. before you pull your car look at a couple of other cars there. see what kinda job he has been doing. If the other cars look good then i would give him a couple of days. If your seeing cars that have bubble, orange pill, hazing in the paint then i would grab my car and run

IMO your screwing yourself by having new primer on top of 1 year old primer. Even if they sand the the old primer its not going to be a good bonding surface.

As for the rain, its not good to paint with that much moisture in the air. The paint doesn't lay down as nicely on the surface causing more pin holes and curing time increases. Unless its climate controlled paint room your going to be glad he didn't paint.

If this car is garage kept and properly taken car of the paint may last a year.

Thanks for all the input guys, he is painting it indoors, he does have an oven. And he didnt paint today because of the humidity in the air. I spoke with him today.

Whew...what a relief.
