I just had my bodyshop do a major compound job on the water- spotted finish. The results were great. Waxing is now a breeze.Friends have approached me wondering why the paint job on their new S550 and a couple of 750il's look like crap compared to my finish.Definite difference on their 'orange peel look' to my Q's almost mirror finish.Only the new LS460 finish seems close.Exactly how did Nissan work the paint to near perfection?Even the Maybach had the peel effect.

Bean counters in action I guess. Can that finsih be reproduced in the event of an accident?

The finish on my 96 is impeccable. Its been garaged so that has a lot to do with it. Regarless of that--the finish is mirror like. Its the best black I've seen on a car.

Black and all the darker colors in general looks more like a mirror finish compared to white or any other light colors.

But Black and dark colors are hard to maintain because they look terrible with scratches almost like dandruff on a a dark haired person, compared to white and other lighter colors.

But proper and safe storage is good for the paint and the rest of the car, EX: Interior, engine bay and electrical equipment.

Wish my previous owners never parked the car under a tree because the roof and trunk have bird crap and tree sap etched into the paint, (Meaning that they failed to remove the tree sap or bird crap in sufficient time and therefore now its impossible to remove with conventional paint cleaning products. and now requires professional attention.)

Wasn't OEM Infiniti paint baked multiple times? I can't see baking an aftermarket paint job since the car is sort of fully assembled already... So by that alone one could say that you will probably not be able to fully re-create OEM paint quality and finish.

ppasto, I am not sure how good you are with wet sanding, but I had the same problem with a previous car and I wet sanded the car. It was metallic black. If you chose to do it, you would need a good rotary buffer, Maguires #85 and good pads. Personally, I think the Q45 paint can handle it, but you can talk to a body shop first and they would be more then willing to give you help.
