While I'm still hanging onto (and, in fact, awaiting the arrival of a replacement case in the mail for) my DS Lite, there are a few "minor" but hugely significant upgrades I'm excited for:
Improved D-pad.The original fat DS had a FANTASTIC D-pad. It had nice short-depth "throws" to the button presses and offered superb tactile feedback while still being easy to press. Perfect combination and a case study on how your D-pad should feel. The DS Lite's D-pad is exactly the opposite. Soft and mushy, with long throws and no tactile feedback. It sucks, and it's something I've lamented since I traded in my launch-day fat for the Lite. The D-pad is actually the thing I'm most excited about, aside from the DSi Store.
Real "Home" system like other modern consoles. Compare the DS to the PSP for this one:DS startup takes you to a menu where you choose which slot to launch software from or takes you to various config menus. Once you start a game, that menu's gone until you power off and back on.PSP startup takes you to a vast menu of many choices from config to playing games from either slot. At any time during gameplay or other use of the system you can hit "Home" to return to that menu and move on to the next thing you'd like to do. No need to power off and back on. It's always two button presses away.
The DSi will have a "reset" function that will take you back to the startup menu at any time with a quick tap of the power button (holding power shuts the system off). That means you can now quit your DS cartridge game and jump to whatever DSi Ware games you may have on your SD card without powering down. It also means you can change system settings quickly and jump right back into your game.
More Memory:The DS fat and Lite both have optional memory expansions you can buy, but they've never been used outside homebrew and the horrendous DS Browser. The DSi's Browser has access to far more memory than even an expanded fat or Lite, and that memory is also available for other software. Unfortunately, since future titles still have to remain compatible with the fat and Lite, we'll probably only see benefits from this in DSi Ware titles or titles specifically programmed to act differently on the DSi (maybe with a separate high-res texture library or something like that).
