Hello,
Yesterday I had to replace a bad battery in my 2002 Pathfinder. I installed it and everything was fine. I then was able to start the vehicle a couple of times to move it within my driveway in order to work on another vehicle. However, later this evening, I tried to go somewhere and the vehicle would not start. It cranked, but would not start. I used my OBDII tester and discovered trouble codes P1610 and P1612. I also noticed the Security light on the dash being solid while trying to start the vehicle.
I tried the suggestions I've read on the forums for disconnecting the battery for a few hours, and for trying to reset the keys using the on/off cycle 3 times before trying to restart the engine again. I also tried using my other key. Nothing has worked.
Obviously, those codes seem to indicate a problem with the anti-theft system, but the fact that I was able to start the vehicle 3 times since changing the battery has me puzzled. Why would the NATS system have become engaged?
Can someone provide some help so I can avoid a tow and trip to the dealer??

Thanks!

David

Unfortunately it sounds like your key or immobilizer may need reprogramming, or one or the other may be fried.

In the past I have heard of people bypassing the security function by using their key to unlock their front door, but I'm not sure whether that is the case here.

Here is a reset procedure I pulled out of an old thread:

A side note: If you try and start the QX4/Pathy and it fails five times in a row due to the NVIS system, it'll go into "lock mode" and you won't be able to start it even with a good key. If you have a scan tool and pull the code P1610, this means you're stuck in lock mode. To reset and get out of lock mode, perform the following steps:

1. Turn ignition switch off.
2. Turn ignition switch on with good key. Do not start engine. Wait 5 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch off.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice (total of three cycles).
5. Start the engine.

I haven't used this procedure, but it is worth a try.

Hope it helps out!

I had a similar experience, no amount of trying to reset the system would help, the imobilizer would no longer recognize the key. Had to have it towed

@saskapath, how was it eventually solved. Having same issue, same codes. All the reset procedures don't work. Do I need to reprogram the key or I need a new immobiliser? How actually is this problem solved.

The dealer had to reprogram the immobilizer, since that time it has not given me any further problems. That's one piece of useless technology I would happily do without. A 16 year old Pathfinder is hardly a hot target for theft and I worry about the thing failing on some out of the way logging road....

Thanks for the update. About to order one of these vag obd 2 cables and download Nissan data scan II in order to reprogram my key and resync the immobiliser

@chukel we’re you able to find resolve for the codes p1610 and p1612. I am having the same issues and getting run around from my local Nissan dealers.

Hello, I have a Nissan Pathfinder with the same problem. No person able to solve my problem in my city. It ended up totally spoiling my ECU MEC14-315 b1. Did I just buy a MEC14-800 b2 will it work correctly? It was the only one that got the complete kit being of the same vehicle and all the same year. Thank you very much
