Hello, I used a scan tool on my 2002 Nissan Maxima and came up with the code P1147. Using your site I found that this code means:

P1147 - Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Maximum Voltage Monitoring (Bank 1)

Looking at the diagram at the link to the above I think I know where that sensor is, but have a few questions. I am a novice.

1. what tools will I need to replace the sensor? Anything special?2. how difficult would this be to do myself?

On a side note: Looking in a Haynes Repair Manual for Maxima 1993-2004 it has a list of error codes. On page 6-9 to 6-10 for 2002 and later trouble codes, P1147 is not listed for oxygen sensors or anything else. Just want to make sure I have the right code.

Thank you for any help,

Joe

That is the correct description of the code. You can purchase/borrow an o2 sensor removal socket to remove it. Wd40, liquid wrench or similar sprayed on a few hours prior to removal will be helpfull. It will likely be stuck in there good.

If you can reach the o2 sensor without burning yourself, another great tip for removing an o2 sensor is to run the car for a while and try to pop it loose while it's still hot. The heat makes the exhaust piping expand a little bit, and that can help pop that sensor loose if it's really stuck.

I bought a "two step" 02 sensor socket. It has two "tubes"... one for the socket itself with an open slot so that you can slide the wiring through it... and the other tube built in is for the socket wrench. I just hooked into it with a 24" breaker bar and it freed up easily enough.

This thread has great info on the location of that o2 sensor. zerothread?id=120838

I would rather use penetrating oil - WD40/PB blaster/Liquid Wrench, on a cold engine than risk getting singed by the hot engine/exhaust manifold.

Bank 1 Rear O2 Sensor (HO2S2-B2) is not difficult to replace, especially if you have the right tools. Just make sure you follow the original harness routing. The O2 sensor must be handled with care (avoid dropping it). And for safety, always use jackstands when working under the car.
