Drove around earlier today and ran a few errands then went to start my car after leaving the store and it would not crank at all but all power worked windows etc. Just made the slightest click. Friend came and we let it sit on a jump for 10 min then it finally started.

CEL has been on for a while and not sure if these were already there but it came back with P0335 and P1335. I'm not sure if these are related to the starting issue.

My battery isnt that old - maybe 1.5-2 years. Possibly starter going bad? Weak battery? It is 15F outside right not but not sure why it would start all day then not after 5 min in the store.

Its a 2001 QX4 with 200k miles.

Those codes could be false alarms related to the starting issue. See here:

P1335 code is essentially the same issues.

The fact that jumping the battery got you started makes me think that's the place to start checking. I guess I'd make sure that you are getting 13.4 volts or so from the alternator at idle (major accessories, lights off). If the alternator checks ok, I would take the battery down and get it load tested. While the battery is out, crawl under the truck and tighten the connections on the starter solenoid - those do get loose at times.

If all those are good, then it may be time to think starter.

I had to do both alternator and starter this spring - both went at the same time. The alternator was putting out 12.8 volts - just enough to keep the charge light off, but not enough to charge the battery for cold cranking. After I did the alternator, the starter still didn't work right. Lets hope your problem is a little simpler.

Don't forget to check retailmenot for coupons if you need parts. I saved some pretty decent money at Advance Auto using those.

How long do starters typically last? Its the original with 200k miles.

Thanks for the recommendations; ill definately start from there. I think my hood release cable is done for and its a pain the butt to get it open I basically have to pry out my already broken grill (with the hood closed my whole front end is messed up nothing aligns and plenty of broken clips/headlights are off center and front bumper was ripped off at one point I just used self tapping screws and just screwed it in the frame and fenders. Or have a friend pull the hood release while I bang on the hood.

Ill have to take to photos long story short I got it from a lady (not so sane with a fat divorce) who let her kids spray paint the car head to toe for graduation. NOT WASTER SOLUBLE PAINT STRAIGHT SPRAY PAINT. And then they used gasoline to get off the spray paint which ate off the clear coat (plenty of panels with bare sheet metal) not the mention all sorts of yellow/blue spray paint in random areas. I thought about painting it but it needs so much body work its not even plausible. I keep the interior nice

Anyway, can Autozone check all those starter items?

I think most starters probably make it up to 120,000 miles plus. But 200,000 plus miles is way good.

My Q is a 2002 and is right at 100,000 miles and the starter went. Kinda hard to tell when thwy will go.

Oops, meant to say yes, they can check the alternator voltage, and test the battery. You would have to pull the starter for them to do a test, but they will test the starter as well.
