Iam getting P0130 and P0325 on my Infiniti i30 1997. Autozone guy told me that these are Oxygen sensor and Knock Sensor. I spoke with Infiniti dealer and they gave me $800 of a quote to fix it but they will do diagnostics first. I am just wondering if here on the forums i can understand some cheaper way fixing these problems.

1) Do i need to replace both Knock Sensor and Oxygen sensor together?2) How much is the cost of the original parts for each?3) I live in North NJ, any mechanic which is reasonable enough ?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sometimes you get a ghost error code of 0325 when you have another problem. The best thing to do is to test your knock sensor for the correct resistance. Do you have a digital ohm meter? There are write ups on how to test this, but if you like I can walk you through on testing it out.

Also, $800 is entirely too much money to spend for either or both of these sensors. The KS goes for $177 with any mechanic or auto store. However, there is a store on Ebay that is selling them for $65 shipped. I bought one of these and they are the OEM switch so no need to worry about quality. The Infiniti/Nissan service manual says that you have to lift the intake manifold and replace all the gaskets. But a person with nimble hands could replace the switch without too much difficulty. Sometimes, it pays or rather saves to do the work yourself. I would really recommend doing the work yourself on this one, that is, if you are mechanically inclined. If you have a decent mechanic do this operation, you are looking at around $500.

As for the Oxygen Sensor, if the computer says its busted than more than likely it really is busted. You should replace this and you should pay the price for a new one.

Thanks for your reply and some encoureging words.

So, let me understand this. I am getting P0130 which means Oxygen sensor and that definetly needs to be replaced ...correct ?

For the KS, I need to first test the resistance and then depending upon the results, replace it ....correct ?If KS needs replacement, i can find on ebay ...correct ?

Please advise and correct me if i have understood correctly or not ?

Also, I have heard from a mechanic that there are 3(or 4) oxygen sensors and if iam replacing ONE, i should replace all ....is it correct or wrong?

Now, as i have to buy and replace Oxygen Sensor, should i buy it from dealer or from ebay .....can you recommend some shops?

Yes, see if you can find out specifically which one is bad.

For peace of mind you can test the resistance of the knock sensor by tracing the wire from the KS to the harness plug, unplugging it, check resistance from the lug closest to you to ground. Resistance should measure ~500 - ~650 ohms. If it doesn't, then you may have a problem with either the harness or the KS (more likely the KS) If you do measure the resistance and you don't get the correct amount come back here and I or another member can help you a little more.

Yes, you can find them on EBay for a very decent price.

Now, as i have to buy and replace Oxygen Sensor, should i buy it from dealer or from ebay .....can you recommend some shops?[/quote]As a general rule, if one goes out, the others can't be far behind. So, the safest, and most cost effective solution in the long run, would be to replace all of them at once. However, if your just looking for a quick fix or saving money then your best option would be to replace only the one that is falsing. In terms of buying them, you can never go wrong with an OEM O2 sensor. There are many aftermarket parts available for our cars, but the ones that make the car run, I only trust OEM for that. One other thing, your car should only have 2 sensors. And don't buy anything from the dealer if you can help it. Any reputable online auto store can sell you 02 sensors for a good deal.

Well, good luck.

I went to another mechanic (recommended by my friend) and he took the codes again and purged them. He said, if the same code back again in few days, then we will see. He said, there might be lot of reasons so let's wait for second turn, and if the same code comes back up again, we will replace it immediately.

But i am sure it will come back again, so i will start looking for some online shops which sells OEM Oxygen sensor for a reasonable price. If you have any suggestions, pl let me know.

Also, the ebay deal (that you recommended) seems very promising for the KS.

Thanks for all your help and guidance.

No problem...though I'm almost certain your O2 sensor code will come back. Of course you might have a short in the wire or a loose connection but that can be checked before any work is actually done. The KS can wait until after the O2 replacement, but it wouldn't hurt to have the mechanic check resistance on that KS switch for peace of mind.
