p0014 after valve cover swap

A forum for lovers of Infiniti's hot-rod crossover, the FX! In 2014, all FX models will be named Infiniti QX70, in line with Infiniti's new naming structure.

I replaced my valve covers on my 2011 fx35 the the aluminum ones, got a code for a bad exhaust cam sensor on bank 1, replaced that but couldn't get hold of an oem brand one so just got what they had at auto store, after that I got the p0014 code. I assumed that maybe the sensor that supposedly went bad was on its way out before pulling it but in any case...

I replaced the solenoid for kicks not realizing at the time that only effects the intake cam, that didn't fix it so I replaced the magnetic retarder on the passenger side (bank 1) and im still getting the p0014 code. Sooo my question is what is the likelihood it just doesn't like that cam sensor I put in? Ias gonna try swapping it from one side the other to see if I get a code for bank 2 after that. I did order 2 Hitachi ones but they won't be here for a few days. Not sure what else to try. I've only had the car for about 2 months and the only code it's given before the valve covers was for the catalytic converter efficiency thing.

You would have got a P0011 if the solenoid was the issue, P0014 is definitely the mag dragger. The sensor can definitely cause that code if it's over- or under-responding to the tone wheel. It's not necessarily definitive, but try swapping the new sensor to the intake or the other exhaust and see if the code changes to a P0011 or P0024. If so, you know the sensor is crap. That won't surprise me, I can't tell you how much hair-pulling and head-scratching I've witnessed over the years as a result of aftermarket Hall sensors.

Turns out it WAS the cam sensor. I'm surprised a new one was causing this. I can't remember what brand it was though.

You've joined a very large club of people who didn't get lucky with an aftermarket Hall sensor on a Nissan engine. I've seen it countless times, and every time the victim is surprised because it was supposed to be "the right part" or it was supposed to be a "reputable brand". There are lots of parts on any Nissan/Infiniti model where going aftermarket is fine, but Halls are not among them.

Anyway, glad you got it resolved. Happy motoring!
