Well in my search for parts I found http://www.safetyautoparts.com. Apparently they manufacture OEM parts and they list a lot of parts for the VH including bearings, pistons, and complete engine kits. I have found that Clevite and Federal Mogul/Sealed Power make bearings and also Hastings rings are made for the VH. While searching for hastings I found that Safety auto parts use hastings rings in their kits.

So, I then called one of thier distributors and got a quote for $330.00 for a set of 8 pistons with rings in my choice of sizes - stock, .010, .020, .030 AND .040 over. I'm just thinking that either I was quoted wrong, the parts are really junk or maybe it's for real.

Any feedback on this?

http://www.safetyautoparts.com they have an online catalog with part numbers

here is the dist. that I called

JDM Engines & Auto Parts North Hollywood, CA(888) 536-2588

Also, amazon.com and rockauto.com is where I found a lot of part numbers and manufacturers of aftermarket parts for the VH.

Hmmm this crowd appears to dislike replying to e-mails. How very frustrating, seeing as I'm after a set of oversized pistons & rings at present.

Well I went to order from JDM and it appears that they don't take credit cards. The guy was trying to get me to wire money directly into his bank of america account and I am not down with that kind of thing so I called a different distributor.

I ended up getting ahold of

Motor Parts WarehousePhoenix, AZ(800) 695-6589

The guy spoke wayyy better engrish than the JDM guy and takes credit cards as well. He has a .020 piston and ring kit in stock for 341.00 plus shipping USD. He told me that he is calling the warehouse to check availability of the .040 kit and I'll call him back tomorrow.

Also, the main and rod bearings are available in .010 and .020 over and the mains are like 42.00 a set and the rod bearings are like 40.00 a set or something or other.

When I get a definite answer I'll check on shipping to NZ for you Metter if you put up some kind of zip code or whatever you guys use over there that he can go by.

Here's a pic of my mains...

And here's a pic of me humping my VH. The intake is so big that my little pecker bounces off the sides and won't come close to getting chopped off by the butterfly...

While I'm at it, here's a pic of the truck the engine is going it. Can't wait...

Well I had no idea but I thought the guy was checking to see if they had them in stock but apparently he just ordered them from the warehouse and got them in today so they are shipping out today as well via UPS ground so I should have them early next week I suppose.

Metter, I asked him and he is going to check for you on those pistons and rings. I'll call them back tomorrow when I get off work and get you a quote. He said they are using a new worldwide carrier and that they are very very cheap because they ship a lot of stuff to holland.

I'll let everyone know how it goes in the end, but so far the service at Motor Parts Warehouse is top notch.

Not sure about the rod and head bolts though but he quoted me about $560.00 for an oversized piston kit shipped to NZ. The kit is 341 and shipping was around 219.

I ended up getting all rod, main bearings and pistons and rings and the total was just under 500 with shipping.

All delivered within 5 business days of ordering. Motor parts warehouse in AZ has excellent service and I would recommend them to anyone!

Those are definitely VH45DE pistons not too many pistons made with the 4 valve relief pockets cut into piston domes!

The pistons even have the coating on them like the factory ones. So you got everything for around $500? That's a good deal. Where is the stuff made? I'm hoping Japan.

They mfg parts for OEM app's including Nissan's. Who knows, they could possibly mfg the factory pistons that Nissan uses in their engines.

"Safety Auto Parts Corp. is proud to present Right Way Pistons. Founded in 1964, Right Way has become a leading manufacturer of pistons, connecting rods, and steering components throughout Asia and the world. Its 3 manufacuring plants produce mostly Original Equipment(OE) parts for companies such as Ford, Nissan, and Isuzu. Right Way pistons for aftermarket applications in the United States are available exclusively through Safety Auto Parts Corp. For the past decade, the two companies have shared a committment to deliver quality pistons for the US Aftermarket. this alliance combines Right Way's renowned manufacturing with Safety's aggressive development philosophy to bring late model pistons to Engine Rebuilders."

It was 479.00 for pistons, rings and all bearings shipped. I think the price was 345 for a set of 8 pistons with rings, pins and clips. I took my block and crank to Performance Unlimited in Norfolk and the machinist said that japanese cranks and so hard that they hardly ever need turned. He's going to polish it and said to just install factory spec bearings. I returned the bearings to Motor Parts with hardly any questions asked, again, great service from them! He was very suprised to see a ridge at the top of my cyl walls even. He said that it's unusual to see a ridge in a jap engine with less than 200k. Then he said "look at this crap" pointing to a american small block with 4 bolt mains. "I mean, your engine even has a bearing girdle from the factory and look at this american crap. Look at that crank compared to this one. So much nicer." lol I didn't expect to hear that from him as his name is Buck and looks like an die hard american muscle kinda guy. I thought he would have told me to get that Japanese sh#@ out of his shop but it was just the opposite. He almost looked excited that he gets to work on a well engineered VH for a change.

Also keep in mind the price difference! U can buy 3 new complete small block USA to 1 JAP factory complete! GM's small block are easy and simple to assemble. Where our VH45DE's are a lot more involved especially with the timing components. U may want to invest in the 93 and later model crank which were Nitrated from the factory!

Lol yeah but they're also 3x heavier and will blow up in 1/3 the time of a VH

It depends. Are we talking about the LSx series or the old small block?

Doesn't sound right to me... I heard you can get VHs in wreckers yards around the US for like 300 bucks if that... surely you can't get a mint brand new smallblock crate motor for that price.

Pricewise, a rebuilt small block will be cheap but it is an antique compared to the VH. Plus, no one cross shops the two engines.

I like the aluminum block LSx series because of its size vs. displacement. But I would never replace an engine like the VH45 in my Q for one though.

On the other hand, I would consider using a LSx engine for a swap into an RX7 or any vehicle that had a small engine bay. A pushrod engine in a car like the Q is a step backward.

I'm not 100% positive about this but, I think our VH45DE's are heavier than a small block V8. I don't want to here about our engines being mostly aluminum because when you sit the VH45DE beside a small block 350. The VH is much larger in girth. I have R&R both and U can manuver the small block 350 much easier then the VH!

BTW T45, they did finally answer me and are being helpful now. They overquoted on the rings the first time round, when I told them I can get them for like 1/5th the price here they requoted much cheaper. I'm happy now, and will go ahead with purchase as soon as I get my new block. Shot mate _b

I bet most small blocks have a lot less crap than VH's have. Itd be more fair to strip both down to long blocks and then compare.

I think the only fair comparison would be the Northstar V8 to the VH45 or VK56.

Thanks for posting up the MPW contact info. Just ordered my pistons and bearings from them and they were super nice and in stock.

Just checked my credit card and it was only $441 for what I hope is pistons, rings, rod and main bearings shipped to my house.
