Well, I overrevved my engine to beyond what the tach will read. Checked under the valve cover and found out 6 of the 8 rocker arms were shattered. It also seems as 1 or more valves are stuck in the open position. The cams are slightly grinded at some of the lobes and some of the retainers have nicks and dents, Portions of the head such as the sparkplugs wells were also harmed by the broken rocker arms, but it doesn't seem to be cracked anywhere. So far this is all I have checked. What else do you all think might have happened? What might it cost to be repaired? As far as labor, I am able to do most of it except machining. What do you guys recommend? Thanks!!!

You're in for some new valves, rocker arms, probably valve guides, after you pull the head, make sure the valves didn't snap and bounce around on the inside of the combustion chamber, if they did you're probably in for a new head and pistons at the very least. If the piston shattered, you're in for some block work depending on how deep the gouges are on the cylinder walls. It shouldn't be expensive to source a new head or block I actually picked up a new shortblock for 300 but it had a spun bearing which was taken care of pretty quickly and pretty cheaply. But while that was getting taken care of I added on a couple grand worth of other machine work and custom work which added to the cost of the service. I suspect you'd be in for about 5-600 worth of damage if it's what I suspect it to be from my own personal experience.

From your experience, do most engines that throw a piston rod still have a good head? I'm asking because I have an extra engine laying around but the block is no good. Thanks!!!

might want to make sure the rod tossing didn't warp the head but should be fine. Another SR? Well first you want to make sure you didn't blow up pistons and gouge out the cylinder walls on the other one too.

Yeah... I'm going to have to pull the head or probably the whole engine and see what's up. Again thanks a lot!

ha ha ha we can compare war stories. I think I've still got the pictures of when my first SR blew up.

call around. I was able to get a deal on my shortblock since I know a few of the guys at Venus Auto so I was able to take my pick and get the parts pretty cheap. They may or may not have bearing damage. call.

i've had bad experiences with venus auto so i try not to deal with them. i've found a place in frisco that's a much better supplier in my opinion. It's called Brisbane Motors. Much better selection...

That's very true. You have to know someone on the inside to get good service at Venus, otherwise it's a flip of a coin.

Marco Vargas at SR20Store.com came highly recommended to me, and after dealing with him I have nothing but praise as my blacktop engine was in some of the best condition I have ever seen from a supplier.

Well, I've decided that I'm going to go ahead and bulletproof the engine. I'm thinking of the following:

Full gasket setMetal headgasketARP hardware all aroundEagle rodsCP pistonsAll new bearingsOil pumpWater pumptiming chainHKS in/ex step 2 264 camsstiffer valve springsTitanium retainersbronze valve guidesrocker armsRASValves.

What else would I need? Also what machine work would be recommended? I'm looking for 375whp street/425whp track. Thanks again!!!

valve job will probably be one of the things that will score you some good gains. get some extra cash set aside for a line bore, grind/balance/micropolish of the crank, balancing of the rods/pistons, smooth out the top of the combustion chamber for better resistance to carbon deposits building up there. I'm sure there's some more stuff to do ha ha ha.

the engine i first was sent, had 2 of the rocker arms fall off. Along with it went cylander 4 and clyander 2(piston/rings). Found out when i went to change the oilpan only to find bits of pistons/rings etc. chilling in there.

-a friend also miss-shifted his red-top from 3rd to 2nd redlining. Needless to say a rocker arm fell off and he destroyed cylander 2. I'de also invest in some rocker-arm stoppers(not sure if anyone else mentioned didnt read whole post) to help prevent it from happening if you catch it quick enough. good luck.
