ya the first thing is change your thermostate they are like 5 buck or something... then make sure your fan is kicking on when it needs to be and when was the last time you changed your oil cause that will cause friction which mean more heat

you have an air pocket in the cooling system. [the heater blowing cold is the tall tail sign] lift the front of your car off the ground as high as you can. remove the bleeder screw from the intake open the radiator cap and fill the radiator up till a solid stream of coolant flows from the bleeder screw. Then reinstall the screw and top the radiator up. With the car still in is raised position start it and turn your heater on set it to blow from the dash vents on full speed. Allow it to run till you feel heat blowing from the vents at idle. You can hold an RPM of 2000 steady till the car reaches operating temp. Then allow it to idle ,add fluid to the radiator as nessesary to keep it full. Note though it will blow warm air from the vents at the higher RPM since it is forcing the coolant through the heater core. your goal is to have heat blowing from the vents after at least one min of idleing.
